An awesome member found this at a local auction. It was incomplete (sans starter and carburetor/filter) but I knew it was special when I saw it was a gear drive. A complete direct drive fell into my lap recently with all the parts to make this gear drive whole. I have seals and rings to freshen it up.

Aside from the gear stuff, there are construction differences between the direct and gear drives. Generally speaking, the gear drive is heavier with more gussets, heavier fasteners, a bigger fuel tank, different reeds. The top ends don't even look the same. The exhaust side of the direct drive piston is a slab side, while the gear drive looks to have squared notches that actually allow freeporting. It is not a broken piston, but I don't know yet if somebody notched it that way on purpose.

Seems Wright made 2 versions of the C-50 gear drive--a planetary version which seems slightly more common and this spur gear type.

That is a cool old saw Chris, you seem to have a knack for finding a lot of old and different saws.

Yes, he does. I want to see the video of the DD saw falling into his lap. LOL :jester:

Some of his PM Canadien saws make me drool ... :msp_wub:

I can't take credit. Mark found the saw and let me have it.

I am given to hyperbole from time to time. It might hurt to get hit by a chainsaw.

Dang, you got that all done today? Even after fixing the brakes on that truck?

You can move fast when you want to cant ya?

How does it sound, I knew the muffler on that was cool as can be.

Truth be known, I'm glad Chris has that saw, I didn't even pay any attention to it when I got it. I just bought it for the bar and 1/2" pitch chain that was on it and gave a whopping $2 for it. :hmm3grin2orange:

Some other joker run the Homelites I was after out of sight and just left me the scraps. Glad hes happy with that run of the mill Homelite 17 and the zips while Chris ended up with this gem!

Sweet saw Chris, The C50G and C70G are on my want list as well.
Saws just haven't been falling into my lap lately. At least the ones
i'm on the hunt for.

Congrats on a nice find.

I imagine it was skipped over because nobody there other than you ever heard of Wright saws. And to think you were going to steal my bar and chain!:dizzy:

I don't have the saw running. I replaced the blown brake line on that pickup, but we can't get all the air out. Seems the ABS module has a mind of its own. (My dad ran the master cylinder empty and filled the system with air.) I have one more idea, then it probably has to go to the dealer.

She's up and running, has been for a bit now. I cut an air filter from a Briggs foam filter and stuffed it into housing on the handle. Not too crazy about it, but it is factory original, more or less.

That is sweet, my man.

Wouldn't happen to have a spare top cover, would ya? That's all that's missing from my D (and the air filter itself which I'd probably fashion similarly to your approach.)

Paid $25 for mine and it started right up, but shot some juice through my hand from some kind of short in that dead man kill arrangement in the handle. :msp_scared: Haven't sorted that out yet, but it has to be a simple short or a chafed wire to ground somewhere.

Anyway, very cool saw ya have there!

Actually, I may have a spare top cover. I'm waiting on a good C50D to arrive. As long as that cover is in good shape, which it looks to be, you can have my spare.

The ground switch is simply a button supported by a flat, thin spring which is secured to the underside of top cover with a screw. The spring contacts the end of the spark plug when you push it down. If you got shocked, then the spring isn't grounded or the cover wasn't making good contact with the chassis.

This freeporting thing that I alluded to, turns out the piston was installed backwards at some point. The skirt matches the ports much more closely with the piston reversed. All good now.

Missed this as well. That looks different from the c50g planetary model - looks more like direct gear reduction. I didn't realize there were two gear drive versions.

Been looking for the planetary model to go with my c70g.

That is a real fine looking saw Chris. Hope to see it in a month or so. Makes me wish I would have kept my direct drive version, no way I would have let it go if it was a gear drive.

Chris actually brought this saw with him the last time he came over and its sweet.

I ran it just a bit but we didn't have much time that day and Chris was anxious to try the KB7 out in the 5' log I had drug home a few days earlier.

I was glad to see it together and running.
