I'm considering replacing my tow behind and small propelled with a large self propelled. I haven't heard much about the older RG85's in the 2wd version. Do they get stuck very easily? Will they climb much slope? Do they steer well without skidding the steer tires? I know they have a lot of HP but how much faster are they than say a 7015 with a more direct drive method,(belt vs. hydraulic) Thanks

I've seen the RG85 cut - it did pretty well. It is a big long machine and not super manueverable - kind of cumbersom.

I looked at one. They are pretty darn heavy. Had I bought it, I was going to mount a small electric winch on the end opposite the grinder wheel. I figured it would get stuck pretty often and I could winch it out.

I looked at one today, I had no idea these were that big! I was buying a smaller machine but I had to check it out. From the pics the look big, but not this big. I figured them for a 4x4, but he said he does not get stuck?

Did you try it out? If it steers decent the size doesn't bother me too much. How was the ground clearance? In pictures they look pretty low built like they could get hung up on chip piles.

The owner just moved it about and turned on the cutter for me. It is larger than my Tacoma. He is selling it FWIW, and from the looks of it he takes care of his stuff. This guy loves to talk, I am sure he would share his thoughts with you. If you want his info PM me.

I told you they are big. I've seen them work - won't go anywhere I can't get my Vermeer Tow Behind in. The 2wd I saw would get massively stuck on its own chips.

I asked the guy what unit he prefers and he pointed to the monster tow behind.

I would pass on a 2wd drive version. We have a 4x4 at work and it got stuck twice this season. I would also see steering as a problem. It is a heavy machine and a little low but it chips very well.....once you learn to use it, it can get in some tight spots.

I would never consider a Rayco now after using a Carlton with a REMOTE. You can't get in a very tight spot if you have to swing that stupid panel around to grind from behind.

(Oh, and I've never gotten 'Babe' stuck even in a nasty blow-over in someones back yard that was in the septic mud I think. Nasty.)

Tracks and remote ftw.

That's good to know. I'm a bit torn right now. I have a rayco 1665AC tow behind that's a great machine and works fine for 80% of what I do. I have 1625 that I use for the rest. I'd sure like a big self propelled but I don't know if I'm ready to spend that kind of money on a side job.
