Tree climbers are a special breed. I have absolute respect for everyone who straps a saw to their hip and takes a step off the ground. Let's face it, as soon as we're off the ground we've violated the rules by not starting the sAw on level ground with the brake on and our foot in the handle. I appreciate this site for the information I've gained and the opportunity to learn from everyone elses successes And unfortunate failures. Unforunately it seems like sometimes it has degenerated into an opportunity for people to belittle others who come onto the site with a genuine desire to better themselves. We all have one thing in common: ther was a time when we climbed our first tree. By joinig this site I think most people prove that they enjoy this industry and want to improve their skills and techniques. Wouldn't it be more productive to the industry as a whole if we welcomed new members and educated instead of insulted?

Just my two cents... Now I'll just cringe and take the insults for being honest.

No cringe. I agree. This should be a place where those that want to learn more can and those that have the knowledge share what they know to make others safer and more efficient. I think its too bad that some forget they too were once a newbie to the tree business and weren't all knowing.

So make up your mind. Do you want reality or nice? If you slip up in this line of work your probably going to get hurt a lot more than a couple of insults. So just don't slip up and you won't get hurt. Simple, real.

Not my point at all. I just see too many posts where some one opens up and Asks for honest advice or help and gets insults in return. I don't see how this erves anyone.

I also see a lot of posts here where someone opens up and asks for honest advice or help and gets the advice or help. While there are a couple threads here in commercial you should stay out of if you are thin skinned, for an example of good, look at all the recent threads treemd has started that have done well.
Honestly, i'm surprised this forum is as civil as it is, what with all the chips on everyone's shoulders. :)
I will admit though, if you come here acting like hot stuff and can't back it up, that's when threads have a tendency to go down hill.

A lot of big egos in this industry. Sometimes that shows through on the threads... Including myself. Couple that with a downturn in the economy and prices in the past couple of years and lots of new startups, I can see where the hostility comes from.

Not only that, this site has a history of slamming obvious hacks who come on here asking all the wrong questions... Not always a bad thing.

Our work environment and the people we work with are usually pretty salty. No different here.

I agree. JollyRodger should learn to take the good with the bad.

I think he was referring to monkeys.

I was watching NOVA last night about man and monkeys and about how we used to hang out in the trees at night and walk the prairie in the day. When is that coming back?:monkey:

Gee.. some of the folks around here do that now I think..

Most of the posters on here are pretty helpful .. and it depends on which forum you post in. If you post in Commercial Tree Care and Climbing.. it is just that "Commercial". Most of the guys in here have been doing it for a while, they (for the most part) know how to do it right.

Yes they get annoyed when some greenhorn tells them how to do their job, yes they get annoyed when some pickup truck hack with a WildThing is taking their bread and butter away.. yes they get annoyed when they see others out doing work that looks like crap and makes their profession look bad.. or when others lowball and drop the bottom out of the industry. Frankly.. don't blame em at all!! So do I..

And you do get a few around here who just tend to kick at each others ankles from time to time.. but that is the fun of playing in the sandbox with grown men - some of whom never really grew up :)

But if you post in the Homeowner Helper or Arborist 101 forums you will get different responses from the same individuals!! They expect different posts in those forums and consequently give different results.

For the most part everything is good.. For new posters in here.. well if somebody acts like they know it all.. then they better be able to put some proof on the table or they are gonna get their legs kicked out from under them.

Look man. I don't know what your smelling and not sure what you mean by that. I'm just here because I thought I'd learn a little something, maybe talk to some people, maybe find a small Co. in my area to work with, maybe not. I've cut and trimmed alot of trees, ground alot of stumps, cut alot of firewood for over thirty years in my career at ODNR. I'm retired now and don't give a if I work or don't work.

Why are you here? Have a nice day.

Maybe I have been here so long, you smelled like spam. Thanks for clearing that up. Maybe a sublimal link at the end of your post made me think that!
I also don't care if you work or not.
Have a nice day.

So there's a pefect example of a long time member and an accomplished one at that lashing out at a new guy that found the site and is looking for some insight from experienced people. This seems to be what a lot of threads have come down to. It's too bad.

I agree, sometimes things on here get childish. Some people have big heads others talk tough behind a keyboard. Others have alot we all can learn from. I'm here to learn and pass on what Iv'e learned to others. I skip the childish BS for the most part unless someone is really stupid or starting stuff with me. Its a good site and is what we make it so I try to make it better.....

When I first found the site, I didn't understand the concept of the forums. I didn't pay special attention to which forum I was replying to.

One (another than myself) of the crotchety old timers jumped all over me for owning my home. Then bashed me for only running a 36 inch on my 'big' stuff. Then told me to be on here for years before having a say.

So I, like a puppy, steered clear of that forum, and have remained relatively neg free since. Someday maybe I'll earn my stripes. :biggrinbounce2::biggrinbounce2:
