Hi, I am trying to disassemble a 1991 stihl 029, I bought with a new bar and chain but was flooding. I cleaned the carb and soaked the stiff diaphram in brake fluid, a tip provided from this website. However, I was stupid enough to start blowing some of the crud from around the sprocket when I noticed I forgot to plug up the exhaust port ( I had already removed muffler) I saw some chips or like object in the cylinder above the piston so I decided to completely tear it apart and clean the cylinder and piston. I am now trying to pull the flywheel from the motor I have removed the nut but it is compressed tight. Is there a gear puller for doing this? also there are a large number of wood chips in the bar oil tank that I saw when draining. Can you flush out with some kind of fluid and refill? Thanks everybody for the tips and guidance

There is a puller for it, I just finished my 039 and I used a 4" 2-jaw puller. I put about 1/4 turn past snug on it and bonked it with a 8oz ballpeen. Popped the flywheel right off the taper.

The puller for an 029 is different than the 026/036 otherwise you could take mine... With that said, I just did a quick search through Bailey's used parts (site sponsor) and he has them for around $12 plus $2 shipping. Don't try to force it, it will break (have an old one to prove it pre-puller).
I will defer the good quality cleaning of the lower unit to some of the other guys on the site, I have tried to wash them out without cracking apart the case with good results (so far anyway). Good Luck...

I could be wrong, and the guys here will get me if I am, but I wouldnt tear that whole thing apart if all you are doing is cleaning it. If you are sure the bearings and such, rings, are good, you could probably get away with yanking the cylinder and flushing it out with gas, or some type of cleaner. Thats what I would do, but some other more experienced saw builders may have a different opinion. on the oil or fuel tank, I would just flush with same stuff, (gas or such) and replace filters.
 
See, thats why I emphasized on what the pros had to say. I didnt know a 029 was bottom loaded. I assume that means the cylinder screws are installed from inside the crankcase? Damn, I hope my MS290 isnt that way, I was looking at rejugging it easily in time with a 310 or 390.
 
There is nothing easy or cost effective about opening up an MS 290, MAJOR PIA and not cost effective, unless you've got lots of time on your hands. When they need major work, they are considered by many here as disposable. Use the search function, please.
 
I am still a little groggy, and am trying to follow the discussion here. Yes,
the 029 is a pain to disassemble, as the 4 screws from the bottom, hold the plastic crankcase, bottom cap of the engine, crank/rod/piston, and top cylinder, together in a big sandwich, with sealant in between. Moreover
the bottom engine cap is attached to the crankcase with one of the barstuds,
which is real fun to remove.
But anyway, the 029/039/ms290/ms310/ms390 are all essentially the same
saw, with some minor variations in cascaps and covers, the 029/310/390
each have differring size piston/cyl as the only real differences, the rest
of the saws being interchangeable.

Don't use an automotive puller to remove the flywheel, and don't smack it with a hammer. Someone AS will have a service manual to send you by email... read it..
 
The puller part number...

The last time I needed to clean out a lower unit form dirt I just used old pre-mix and poured it out. Then I lightly sprayed it with fresh 2 stroke oil, I keep some in a squirt bottle for rebuilds. Then I have let it ride, and never really had a problem...
