Just got back from my brother's farm where I lent a hand felling a large red oak. We cleaned up the upper limbs and have shut the saws up wondering what to do with the remaining base stock. Essentially, we have 24 feet of clear and solid stock the base of which is 40" across. One monster tree. Do you make beams, quarter saw? Sell as whole log? We know this is good mill material - but the size and quality of the 24' length leave us kinda stumped.

Well i if ya have a way to get it to a mill i would sell it but prices suck right now. If ya need the lumber i would think it a good idea to mill it up yourself. if your gonna take it to a mill i would buck the first log to 10'6" and then the next to 12'6" or 14'.

Get a spec sheet from the mill you are sending it to. They will tell you what they want. No sense in ruining a perfectly good log because you cut it 4" and the mill wants 6".

ask around for people with portable mills that might come over and do it on sight for a bit of money. Sounds like its too nice to waste as firewood.
