Huh? that looks like a hay field compared to the piss-poor managed forests round here

I was judging by the live crown ratios.

jamseson, are you going to do a west coast sweep? theres a few that will give ya the grand tour.

Man I'd love to. Back in Boreholeville right now tryin' to make and save some money.

If he comes out here he might never go back to Texas.

You're correct, Bob.

Been on the road for the last 7 days.

Decided to drop in and see redprospector, the man better known as the man "demoted to a thinning contractor" :hmm3grin2orange:

Great down to earth guy.

Took me on a tour of his current job on some private ground. Basically thinning for fire, removing sick, dead, and dying.

Doug-fir, ponderosa and southwestern white pine (they call it sugar pine there) are the dominant trees up in the mountains.

Really nice country down there in southern NM.

Sure hope they get some rain down there.

Anyhow, if any of you guys make it down that way, be sure to say hello to him. Nice guy.

Here's a clip from driving around in the Sacramento Mountains.

Jameson,
It was real nice to meet you, I'm glad you decided to drop in. You're welcome here any time. I just wish we could have spent a little more time together.
I got some funny looks from my crew this afternoon when I started to laugh, and no one had said anything. I was thinking about you looking at my loader and saying "Damn, how old is that log loader?".

Hey Andy, this looks promising. Hope it pans out so all you loggers can stay busy!

The left coast should be blue since it's been practically under water this entire year! Full week of rain save for Saturday in the forecast. It amazes me how much moisture we have had while others are in drought.

Its been the same here for the past three years here in NNY.

Yehaw!!! It's raining here right now. A nice steady rain, not a gully washer.
Don't figure it'll be enough to get us out of danger, but it's a good start. It's been over 100 days since we've had any moisture at all, and it wasn't much then.

Sure wish we could give you some of our rain Andy. . . It's been annoyingly incessant for many months.

I could come down there for a vacation, and that would make it rain. Three of us mossy folks broke a drought in the Four Corners/Grand Canyon area in 2006. We had been looking forward to getting some sun, and they had been in a drought for a longer time. When we got to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, the sky opened up...this was in March. There was snow on top. The local people were thanking us for bringing the rain.

As was our habit, we had darn good tents and raingear with us, unlike most of the other campers.

I believe we may get Summery here for a couple of days. Time enough to cut the now at hayfield quality lawns. The mower will be lugging.

If you're sure you can make it rain, I could probably take up a collection that would at least pay for your gas. The locals might not let you leave though if you were successful.

I snapped a few pics for ya today that give you a taste of what to expect if you make it out this way, Jameson. This was during about a 9 mile hike (roundtrip) on the McKenzie River trail. The total trail is about 30 miles I believe, and all that I have seen have looked just like this....

I wouldn't really consider this tree to be "exceptionally big", it just happens to be the one I stopped to take a pic with...

... And if the trees themselves weren't worth the trip, this was the actual destination of our hike. No, it's not just my camera, the water is actually that blue!!
