Dawn Redwood or West coast Redwood?
If you are referring to Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) I would venture to say that no, it is not related to the Japanese Cryptomeria (Cryptomeria japonica). Dawn Redwoods lose their needles in the fall whereas the Cryptomeria is considered an evergreen. Wiser minds may know better.
