I received an 026 with a bearing on the ignition side that only has the outer band of the bearing left. The case is OK. How can you remove the outer bearing band from the case? (this is the case side that has the small hole and the bearing is installed from the inside) Can I heat the case and try to pry it out, or is there an easier way? Tips, suggestions? thanks

Tom

What I am seeing is an outer bearing race that is pressed into a blind recess with no means to get a puller behind it. Heating the case will loosen it but still no way to drive or pull it.
What I have done in similar cases is cut a disc of steel that will just fit inside it and carefully arc weld it to the bearing race, being carefull of ground attachment and not striking arc where you dont want it. the welding often causes enough shrinkage that the whole works will fall out once it is cooled. If not you got something to hit on

Frank's right, run a bead on the inside of that bearing race and let it cool, and it will either fall out or you can gently pry it out when it cools, some machine shops also have specialty inside pullers that can get that thing out. We get those all the time in log cutter's saws and using the welding trick works for us.

Tom- if you have a real steady hand you can grind through most of the bearing rim with an air die grinder and a carbide bit, leaving a tiny, thin strip of it which you can use a flat screwdriver to break through- this way you won't damage the bearing seat too badly. Just in one spot, then when you've broken through it will pry out easily.

races are very hard and they will break if you take a good sharp punch to it just be careful

Flying pieces of shattered bearing travel faster than you can outcareful. I had one in my face and didnt know what happpened until blood started dripping. I think it would be pretty hard to shatter anyway when it is supported all around in a recess.
