I get the carbide tips, shims of silver soldier, flux, and the filler wire from Bolder City Tool 810-758-5574.

Here is how we do it.
1:Clamp the tooth in a bench vise upside down so the carbide is facing up.

2: Take the torch with the welding tip and heat the carbide untill it is cherry red and use needle nose to take off the tip. (We drop them in a bucket of water)

3: Put some flux on the tips bed and burn it off.

4: Take a shim of soldier and drop it on the bed. (I use needle nose becaus I like my fingers)

5: Set a tip on the shim.

6: Heat the iron part mostly, because from what I understand, the soldier goes towads the heat. You will see the tip suck down or something like that.

7: Remove tooth (wear gloves) and set it aside

8: Repeat

9: IMPORTANT When the teeth have cooled check and make sure that the tip is surounded by soldier, if it aint reheat the tooth and the carbide and use the wire to fill in gap. Don't melt the wire into the gap.

A several years ago this was real popular until somone messed up and a tip came off and killed/hurt someone and they banned it. So do it right please.

LJ, Who are "they"? If it is banned why is someone selling you the stuff to do it? Brazing is the factory method for attaching the tips in the first place. (Silver soldering if a form of brazing so maybe the stuff you are using is indeed silver solder or maybe it is nickel silver brazing alloy-doesn't really matter Border City Tool knows what it takes to tip teeth. Your description is fine I just don't get the "banned" part.

They cost around 1.50 a tooth.

I am not sure who banned it or what, I just remember hearing something about it. I guess the ban has lifted, we started off with 100 tips and have kept going, last month we got in 400 or so I think.

We use Border City as a supplier of stump teeth too. A $ 1.50 sounds about right for tips, aprox. half the cost of new ones. I doubt tipping teeth is an automated process, has to be done by a person skilled in brazing.

We are going to have order some teeth soon, I'm going to check into this as we have all the welding stuff to do it. I just never bothered asking if you could buy the tips themselves.

I've never seen any new teeth with silver solder on them, only regular braze, Which one would hold the tip better, I would assume braze because that is what they use, silver solder is more used for electronic component connection and sweating copper pipe. doesn't require so much heat as braze would to form a good union between metals.
