Super nice saw! Pardon my ignorance here, was the problem with the rope diameter, or material, or both?
Both. Polypropylene is not really a good choice for a starter rope, not as tough as nylon in this application and you could only get a few wraps on the starter pulley due to the large diameter.

Yubi - Alan is correct, I just glanced at the all yellow saw and made an assumption...

This is a 440 with the "non Super Series" type engine and shroud. They generally came with a RH starter as shown here.

That saw you show is indeed a Super Series engine design with LH starter and the somewhat special 1/2 wrap type handlebar. The only Super Series that I have encountered with a LH starter is the 795L but they had a different color scheme here in the US. You probably need to investigate that saw further as it seems to be somewhat unique. It would be very interesting to know the model number stamped on the bottom of the crankcase.

It might be different because I am living in Austria (a small country in Europe). In Europe we never really had full wrap handles. I was thinking of buying those two McCullochs. But the seller is asking 330€ for 4 Chainsaws that I could pick from a pile. This is to much for me as getting parts for McCullochs in Europe is nearly impossible. Thank you guys for trying to help me find the models :)
