I threw a chain the other day and damaged the tip on a bar. (nipping brush and chain was a little loose, didn't have much to left and wanted to finish without stopping and killing time tightening chain. So in the end it cost me even more!) Is it hard to replace the tip? I can "press" the rivets out with my chain break but how do you replace the rivets? Is there a special tool or are they hammered in and filed smooth? Does the rivets come with the new tip? I hate to buy a new bar when the tip is all that needs replace.

Yes, it is quite a bit cheaper to replace the tip rather than buy a new bar. Yes, you can press out or drill out the old rivet and use a hammer to press the new rivet in place and flatten it out. Be careful not to damage the bar when you hammer the rivet in place. Yes, the rivet comes with the new tip. Most often there are directions right on the package that it comes in. Most any place that carries a good assortment of bars can get the tips to go with them.

Ball-peen hammer and the top of a vise, or even the bumper of the truck will work in a pinch. You may want to match up the rivet before you make your first attempt, so that you can buy a spare before you start. Might save you a long search for another rivet on a Sunday afternoon! (voice of experience:eek: ) Seriously, though, It is relatively easy, and far better than replacing an otherwise still useful bar.

I'm glad you asked, since I just bought my first replacable- nose bar in 15 years. I have never replaced a nose on a bar before. I figured I might finally be good enough with a saw to wear out a tip before I bend the bar beyond repair. :dizzy:
