Verdict is in. The handle is definitely broke.

I benched it this morning. Stud holding the filter cover is snapped off flush with the filter plate. No biggie, it only needs to be extracted and a new one installed. I even have an entire plate with the stud, started to change it out but my old eyballs weren't seeing things well enough so bagged that. Screw holding handle on is in place and tight. Of 4 screws holding the fuel/oil tank on, 1 was missing, 1 was loose. Several other screws also loose.

Loaded up and off to Potlatch, Id (Idaho Rigging) the only Stihl dealer anywhere near. The confirmed (already knew it) that the handle is definitley broken and parts are unavailable (knew that too except over the 'net used).

Priced saws. Near $600 for a 440. He tried to push a 390 but I had not heard much good about that one. He sorta convinced me (jury is still out) that my MS310 will run a 25" bar just fine with a full skip chain. I am dubious but I bought the set up ($85, bar/chain). Will give it a try my next trip out.

The 041 is up for bids. Will go as a parts/display saw but only needs a bit of work plus that handle part to be a useable saw again.

Is the case still good? How much do you want for the saw? I have a 041 AVE Super that needs a case, but was running fine before I took it apart to find out why it kept eating the plastic insert for the starter dogs. I replaced it with a 460 and keep going back and forth about selling it and fixing it.

Why not buy a new handle off the net? There's one on Ebay right now for $20. Then you can keep it as a backup saw to your 310. I broke the handle (and air filter stud) on one of my 041's too, and went this route. Good as new now.

Good point!

.....but the 041 is NOT a backup to a 310. I had a 310 and my father has a 041.

I am still debating that route and may do it yet. Truth to tell, I am rather tired of horsing that moose around. Then there is the 'fix one thing and another happens' bit with it.

Other than the broken handle and the filter stud needing replacement it is an A1 saw. Fix those two items and it would be right back at work. I turned it off half way through a cut on a 39" log when I noticed the problems.

I have no idea what it is worth. May do a bit of poking around in ebay to get a feel for it but in general I just don't like fooling around with the buy/sell routine. Foolish? Yes!

Selling it minus bar/chain for $75 plus shipping. The bar/chain will fit the 310

I was out to the wood patch today. Fell a 24" dbh and bucked up the bottom 8" with the 310/25" bar full skip. Worked well so I guess I don't need another saw. Just need to get or build some sort of a scabbard to hold the spare bar/chain combo rather than just throwing it in the cab.

It is late at night here and I'm sleepy and I must missing something there. Why would one limit oneself to only one model when shopping for a new saw?

Just be happy the chainsaw disciples have given you sage advice. You do not want to anger the chainsaw gods by asking questions. Don't be a chainsaw apostate.

Have you made your mourning pilgrimage to the white shrine of orangeness and gotten replacement parts? Do not neglect your moral duties, and the 041 will not neglect you.
