Okay over the years I have seen quite a few trees killed by ringbarking, not something I like to see. But I have seen on different propertys about a dozen sycamores that have been completely ringbarked and show no signs of dying.
How come? Its been bugging me for a while.

Check to see if the ring barking was deep enough, perhaps it only went to the depth of the outer bark.

I can only think that it's not deep enough and possible the tree is surviving on the previous years (secondary xylem & phloem).

Pretty weird, close up pics would be real good and see if you can remove a patch of bark to check depths.
