I lost three lovely paper birch last winter during an ice storm. I hated to lose them, but one was getting tall enough that it would touch my power lines and the house anyways. A landscaper recommended that I replace it with a single river birch. He said it would not bend like my old birches and be more disease resistant. My problem is that the location is within 15 feet of my foundation and my septic tank, and I've heard that these trees have extraordinarily invasive roots. I could plant in further away, but then it would be where I think the leech field is. Any suggestions?

More insect resistant, not so much disease resistant & less likely to break. Not a good choice for your location. Also trees have attractive lower trunks when young not so much in 20yrs. Look at a paper bark maple.
