Just trying to get a feet for how some work climbers prune river birches... More related to multi stems rather then single stems. We usually top each stem and leave the biggest caliper trunk the tallest, and the smaller caliper trunkt he smallest.THen that follows by shortnening the branches and thinning etc... So in other words the biggest caliper is also the tallest, and then nest in the same suit and so on...Just curoius if this is the way other guys do or not.

Popular tree down here. We don't shorten the leaders unless they need it for stability, which is seldom. Sprawling ends get reduced to upright laterals=directional pruning. Let em grow to their full size, reduce or thin when ends are heavy enough to be at a high risk to fail.

Big wounds mean big trouble because it is a poor compartmentalizer.
