I just picked up an old 026. Is there a way to measure the wear in the big end rod bearing? I can detect an ever so slight amount of play in the bearing if I hold the piston still and move the crank back and forth slightly. There is no discoloration from heat on the rod or crank. I just want to make sure the crank is good before I put any more money into the saw.

Nope... and it's real easy to get fooled by "play". If it's not real floppy, I'd just try it.. It would be unusual for an 026 to have a failed crank, and if it doesn't, plent yavailable for not much money (but a lot of effort).

Sounds like the consensus is, "go fo it". I used to own a Yamaha Banshee quad. In order to measure the rod bearing wear, you measured how much it would lean side to side. Some lean was considered normal. Based on that experience and your replies, I should be good to go. Just checking though.

I just had my 024 apart and noticed the same "play". After a bunch of wiggling and stuff I came to the conclusion that it was very hard to discriminate between a little up and down play to side play, the old and new pin were the same, so I came to the conclusion that it was ok.
Runs great!!!

Here's the end result. The rod was fine. I totally disassembled the saw, including splitting the case. New piston/rings. All new gaskets and seals. New bar and chain. Painted the case and baked in the oven. Replaced the tank since the handle was cracked. Rebuilt the carb. It starts up and runs great. I'll be lucky to get my money out of this thing. With everything I did to it, I've got quite a bit in it. Oh, I even opened the muffler up while I was at it.:rockn:
