Root cut- more worried

I cut a root that was bigger than I first thought and now I’m super worried.

It’s a pine tree, very tall. The diameter is 21 inches and I cut 7 feet away from the tree. I only cut one root and it was 3 inches in diameter.

Did I ruin the tree? Is there anything I can do?

I expect it is similar to cutting a branch and a young healthy tree should heal well and focus more of its growth on replacing the roots lost .

Thank you- but it isn’t young. The diameter of the trunk is 21”. Does that change anything?

Assuming that the tree is healthy, you probably damaged only a few percent of the root system of the tree. So it will probably recover.
