I like to save money when it is possible to do so without cutting corners.

I used to use a bucket for my rope, but now keep it in duffles and backpacks that I had laying around. They work great and can be reshaped to be stuffed places a bucket could never go. My favorite is a free-to-me columbia backpack with the water hose holes in it. I leave about 8 inches of rope hanging out of the hole and tuck it into an elastic band on the shoulder strap. Then I can grab the end of the rope and go and it flows out of the bag like silk.

I'm wondering what everyone else uses for carrying rope/gear.

Im with you man... what ever you can use to save cash... I have a couple decent bags if I need to use one, they do have their purposes. But buying a bag for every damn rope gets to expensive... I started using these for my 150' ropes a few years ago and I love them.

I have Vinyl bags, same material as trucking tarps.
They ahve been thrown out of trees and thrown around for years, a couple of em are over ten yrs old and still pretty good condition, h2o proof and durable and keep all the dirt and nasties out.

My vinyle bags can be repaired easily its vinyl so you can stich or patch it a tarp supply or do it yourself.
Mine have never been repaired plus they take magic marker so you cna label the bags contents easily.
My best buy is my 5/8" bull rope bag it is a rooftop cargo bag even though it isn't waterproof it zips open to a large tarp and is just starting to shed the inner coating/plasticy stuff, I think I paid 14 bucks at TSC for them.
Cheers

I hate to tell you that I don't think no self respecting treeman is gonna carry his rope in THAT !:msp_ohmy:

Seriously, what is the matter with you?

I would at least paint the cat litter bucket and put a sticker on it. That would be a good use for those stickers in the wesspur catalogs.
Paint it to match your rope colors and then you will know which rope is in which cat pail.

I use canvas tool bags from harbor freight for my climbing lines.
Still looking for a free/cheap bag for my 200ft bull line.
I'm going to talk with a guy who has a industrial sewing machine and see if he could make to order some bad ass rope bags that'll last.

Shade cover mesh (not sure correct name) is some tough stuff that can be sewn. Makes good seat protectors too.

I just bought a rope bag!

And it works great!

I'm gonna buy another!

That's not a way to save money.:msp_razz:

I like my free columbia bag better than a rope bag any day. I can put all kinds of other gear in the other pockets, like carabiners, lanyards, straps, etc...

I use a rope bag for my big bull rope, it was on sale at Vermeer for 50% off, so I grabbed it. Its the only rope that I put in a bag, all others hang in the tool box on the J hooks. I use 6 gal, home depot buckets for the rigging gear, slings, portys, whoopies, loopies, blocks, pulleys, yadayada, etc and all that Jazz.

I have a couple of the bags from wesspur. After a bottom blew out on me though, I've started sewing up my own, with webbing reinforcements to prevent future, eh hem... Blowouts.
Super cheap if you've already got a good sewing machine.

I can't find one for my new 290' 3/4" bullrope either so I am just gonna get some think duck cloth and sew my own.

And yes I can sew. I am pretty good at it. I used to make a lot of my own rock climbing gear. Made a nice chest harness for hanging gear on when trad climbing.

I got a new bag from treestuff, holds its shape great, and makes it easy to flake. We'll see how it holds up.
I like the milk crate idea and the suitcase idea too. I have my climb line in the bag and all the other ropes are coiled and hung in the man cab.

I am not so cheap I wouldn't buy a 60.00 pretty yellow rope bag for my bull line from a retailer, but its the fact that they seldom last longer then 6 months that pisses me off. And those climbing line bags with the wire in them, nice concept but after 3 months the wires coming throu the side and they're falling a part.
As far as crane jobs go I never fly with out harbor freight canvas tool/rope bag 17.00 and they never ware out.View attachment 302471

I don't mind spending $ on gear, not a bit. BUT, I did notice my new bag was made in China... don't have much faith in its longevity. Who sells a quality rope bag that stays open when needed and holds up to the abuse of tree work? Anyone, anyone, Bueler?

P.S. I really hate harbor freight!

Don't be a freighter hater:laugh:

These work real well for me.

Husky 18 in. Tool Bag-82003N11 at The Home Depot

The frame inside the common tool bags hold it open while you are feeding a rope back in. Much better, in my opinion, than any rope bag. Furthermore, they have a sturdier bottom that doesn't wear out like all the rope bags seem to do. You can shop around and find nearly any size you want, generally for less than a "rope bag".
