I'm new to tree work and only doing some light logging off of the property for firewood. What rope is used for pulling logs out of the woods? My tree guy had this stuff on his winch attached to his chipper... looked about 9/16" and grey in color. That stuff could pull anything without breaking. It wasn't steel core as it was really supple.

Is this what you call bull rope? What kinds of ratings for this type of work? The stuff looks stronger than chain.

Thanks,

Mike

Winch rope is a specifically built product. I do not know of anybody buying winch rope and using it for a different application. I would use some steel slings, some large shackles and Samson Tree Master 3/4" rigging rope. Even this recommendation is a shot in the dark. We need to know how big of pieces you expect to move and what size equipment you will be pulling with. Remember, you will lose 45% of the ropes strength with a knot, only 10% with a spliced eye.

These guys were doing work at my place. That was not steel rope. I don't think it was much larger the 5/8" dia and it was as supple as climbing rope.

AmSteel Blue rope (google)
many times stronger than the same diameter steel cable and less than 10% of the weight, much safer to use as well.
Ex: 5/16" cable 9800# break strength vs 5/16" rope 13,700#
It can take quite a lot of abuse as well. Most winch companies are starting to supply their units with this type of line rather than the old cable.
