With a muffler mod 13000 I believe. Its not really a high revving saw stock.

Well then you need to ask the guy that ported it. To take advantage of the porting, you need to match your rpms to the porting specs. Keep an eye on your spark plug and make sure it has a nice semi dark tan color

I dont think anyone but the builder could tell you at least without running the saw. Depending on how it ported ideal RPM could change dramatically.
Tune it to break between 2 and 4 stroking WOT with a little saftey margine to the rich side, do some timed cuts and read the plug.

Stock RPM specs on the 044/MS-440 are 2800 idle and 13,500 top no-load speed. What specs a modified saw should run at depend on how it was built, like Timberwolf said.

I have my 440 at 14,100 right now...I have my modded muffler on it...no porting. The safe RPM range is 13,500....you could turn it to 14,000 with no ill results. The ported RPM range is much higher.......atleast a 1,000 rpm higher than stock. I had my 440 at 13,800 for the whole time it was stock.:greenchainsaw:

Kinda hard to just throw out a generic number.... my old 046 didn't like anything over 13,200 even though the factory says 13,500 and that saw had the muff mod, but my MS460 will run close to 14,000 with the same mod.
Your gonna have to learn to listen to your saw..... turn her rich and then start slowly leaning it out until you hear the burble go away and then come back until it just starts to burble again. Your saw could tune anywhere between 12,500 and 15,000 depending on what was done to it. Best to put the tach away and tune by ear and then see what she's running on the tach.
I think a lot of guys run their saw out to the ragged edge of the max RPM hoping to go fast, when really the saw will perform best a hair rich of that max number. Just my .02

You cannot tune a ported saw to any fixed number. It's a whole different animal. It will have to be tuned by ear and/or timed cuts. My 460 runs best at 15,000 turning an 8-pin sprocket on a 28" bar.

Ignore the service manuals for such specs... they were written a long time ago and never updated! Stihl publishes "test and setting data" for all their products - that contains the correct info.
The Stihl spec is +/- 1000... which means the correct setting can be within +/-1000 of the 13,500 spec... WOT is a CRUDE approximation and is only "valid" for a medium length bar. The ear is best, verified by the tach, and a tweak to the rich..

If the saw isn't broken in yet the builder will likely suggest you run it rich, like 1,000 rpm under where it likes to run.
+1 Most cut best a tad rich, unless your cutting twigs. Steve

What about us hearing impaired guys? I'm not sure that I can hear the 4 stroke.My hearing has really gone to he77 in the last year or so

The one 044 I bought runs about 16.5K 
I think maybe i worded my question wrong. I want to know what the safest rpm is to run an 044. After cutting with it today i tuned it to how i like a saw to sound and run. Checked the rpms and it was running around 15800. Seems high to me but its where the saw like to be and cuts best. I just dont wanna push it too hard. Thanks again folks
