I've got a question for all the pros out there.

I've got a chain that I would like identified as to its exact pitch and gauge. Naturally I would like to hear the reasoning behind the identification.

The chain says 'Sabre' along with the number '373'. It has the number '25' on the depth gauge, and what appears to be the letter 'D' on the drive links.

Hint: It appears to be a 3/8" chain. And I understand that Sabre is apparently a defunct chain/bar maker that appears to have been owned at one time by Homelite/John Deere.

Thanks in advance.

.370 x 50 "mini"

I just ran into a problem with this weird chain on an old Mac I found in my Grandad's shed. Looks like 3/8's but 3/8's don't fit.

Is this what you're talking about?

What................Google down this mornin Sappy, or are ya banned from there too?

My, and aren't you looking beautiful this morning! No wonder your former avatar has an eating disorder.

Judging by the non-response, this one indeed appears to be beyond google's capabilities. This one separates the men from the boys.

The easiest way is just to measure it. The pitch can be determined by measuring the spacing between any 3 rivets and dividing by two. The guage is just the tang thickness. 0.043, 0.050, 0.058,0.063 or .080 are common, with .080 usually only found on harvester chains.

I don't know. I'm pretty sure it's a 3/8", but I could be wrong. The pitch is what really has me baffled... .50, .58, or .63? There doesn't seem to be much info available on these old Sabre chains...so the answer would likely come from an 'old-timer'. :)

That was my 'last resort' option. I was hoping to find some documentation somewhere I could use to confirm measurements :)

(Would wear on an old chain muck up the difference between 58 and 63 gauge, for instance?)

Yes... and some guys will put in an 063 chain in a worn 058 bar... Find a non-worn spot in the chain up high on the tang to measure. Punching out a link may be required.

Have you tried a search here? I just rember it mentioned a couple times?

But your calling the gauge pitch,,,,, Pitch is the distance between drivelinks,,,,, Gauge is the width as it sits in the track, or bar-grove it fallows.

There is also a Collecters Corner that may have Sabe info?

Thanks for the replies. Yup, I meant to type 'gauge'...sorry for the confusion. I'll try the search here again.

Just a thought, is that something that might be on Acres site? Or is that only chainsaws?

Mac ran a couple of odd sized chain pitches. I would have to look it up ( go out to barn, dig thru boxes) to be sure but you might have .357 or .354, something like that. I cannot remember for sure.
