Hi. I bought an old chainsaw the other day, cleaned it up and got it running. It runs well and seems fairly powerful but it is without a chain brake. I don't see any indication there was a brake, but then if it was removed maybe there wouldn't be much sign left? Did they make chainsaws in the 80s without chain brakes? The saw only cost 20 bucks. Was that too much to pay considering no brake? Thanks.

I don't know about that brand or model of saw but I have several Mac saws from that time that didn't come with chain brakes. Most of my firewood cutting is done with saws that don't have brakes. I seldom take them on jobs just because someone else might pick them up. I use the brakes on my saws that have them but am perfecrly confident in using a saw that doesn't have one.
In over 60 years of sawing I have yet to be saved from a kickback by a chain brake, but have change out a lot of saw side plates to add that feature to older saws that didn't come with one.
According to Mike. That saw was made in '87 WITH a brake.

Not sure how to upload pics. I'll see if wife can do it. I guess when brake mechanism goes people simply remove. Thanks for the replies.
