I swear to whatever God, ism, or void you pray to...I cannot get my "search" option to work...so...

What is meant by a saws balance?? I'm assuming it has something to do with the point at which the weight is equally distributed. But obviously this is effected by bar length.

If I have offended anyone by my :jester: lack of knowledge well...ya got to start someplace.

Balance to me means 2 things. How much pitch the saw has, be it bar up or down. I prefer a balanced saw there. I also prefer a saw that is easy to hold from the side handle and it balances nicely while making a backcut or plunge.

It means a lot of different things to different users... Personaly, I like a larger saw to be nose heavy... and a smaller saw to be somewhat neutral.

That is what I was going to say!

Course the nose heavy thing can be overdone, like my 066 or 395 with a 42 inch bar. Feel like sir lancelot.

Where is my friend SawTroll? His middle name is "balance!!!!!"

I'm with Andy as usual. I take my saws nose down...and I don't own any small saws. For me, I run my saws in timber and then in firewood. Once the saw is in the cut, vertically, it's "balanced," as the cut is taking the load of the saw. In firewood, with a nose-down saw, it provides it's own weight to help pull itself through the wood if I'm not dogged in.

And as far as carrying it, in timber, I carry the saw over my shoulder so balance is moot, and longer bars help with that too. And carrying a saw in my backyard....who cares?

This is a 440/28" if I remember correctly.

I want a nose heavy saw if I am wearing corks and walking the log, but working on the ground alongside I would rather have a shorter bar that is neutral or just slightly nose heavy because I can limb a lot faster and easier.
