Saw Chain

I just recently got my Husky 350 w/20" bar. There was to have been a second chain included in the deal. When the saw arrived it only had one chain with it. I called & they were to send the 2nd. chain. I got it today.

Here's my question. The first chain was in Husky box labeled

H30 078G 5018406-78 .325 .050" / 1.3 MM
The chain was stamped with the #30 on the drive links. Up on the rivet section stamped w/Husq. On the opposite side of the chain, on the depth gauge of the cutter (I think that's what it's called) it's stamped with the letters LV.

Now the 2nd. chain came in a clear plastic bag, instead of a box.

It had a label stapled to it, with the following: 920D-78E Chain, 325-050 CH Safety. Down on the drive links is stamped with the # 320 on one side, nothing on the other side. This 2nd. chain also has quite a bit of rust on it.

My Husky manual lists two chains for my 350/ 20" bar. One is the Husqvarna H30, that came with my saw, and the other is the Oregon 95VP. As I mentioned, the 2nd. chain that came today is a different animal.

Does anybody know what this 2nd. chain is?

And, if nothing else, don't you think all the rust on it would warrant me returning it for another, even if it was the correct chain, which I don't think it is??

I would not use the chain with the rust on it. And, by the time you pay postage to send it back, and for the time you will have invested, you could almost just buy another. I wouldnt worry about it. By the way, I have 4 saws. 2 of them are 350's, and 2 of them are 346xp's. You will LOVE the 350. Both of mine have been 100% reliable, and are very powerful for their size. Also, one thing I noticed about my 350's, they really came alive after about 20 hours of use. They are a little tight when they are new, but when you break one in, it seems like you almost gain double the power! Make sure and stick with the narrow kerf chain for these saws. They cut much faster. The H30 is narrow kerf, also the Oregon 95vp is too. I buy all of my chain from Jeff Sikkema. He just introduced me to some narrow kerf Carlton chain, and it is the best chain I have used so far. He sells it cheap too, and it will get to your house in 2 days. Dam<i></i>n, google's good.&nbsp; (I remember when they were just running on donated computers, with some of the boxes made of Legos)&nbsp; Entering <b>920D +chain</b> there returns first (meaning "I feel lucky" would work) <a href="http://www.brownandwiser.com/oregon_chain_cross_ref.html">Oregon Chain Cross Ref</a>, which see.

It sounds like you've got about as good a deal as you're going to get on this one.&nbsp; If they had to be shaken for the chain and they sent you one in that condition, I doubt you'll fare much better by sending it back.&nbsp; It's certainly not worth the cost of doing so in my opinion.&nbsp; Just blast it with WD40 and a brass-bristled brush.

I would run the second chain they sent you, and go on down the road. A small amount of rust won't hurt much.

When you get replacement chains, I would get Carlton or Oregon (pro type) full chisel chain. That will be K1L in Carlton, I don't know in Oregon; I do not speak Oregon.

i believe id at least call an see if u can trade it for an 95 vp chain.. then cut with both chains an report which is the fastest..ive nevr had the chance as both the 028 an 026 took .63 gauge and the saws i had with 95 vp were 50 gauge.
my opinion a its gonna be close as the 95 is really smooth and really cuts. id like to hear what your results would be.
also if u got an 16 inch bar ,it pay u to try it with that saw. but this is just my preference on a saw that size ,cause i got bigger saws.. good luck.

I agree with Tony. Get a 16" bar. Especially if it is your only saw. I have a 350 and it came with a 20" bar. I got the 16" and used it mos all the time unless I needed the longer bar. Because of this site I no longer use the 20" bar...........I have bigger saws now The 350 is a good saw. Do the muffler and it will be better. (Hehe..hey butthead....he said do the muffler)

The chain is ok it's just some old Sabre chain they had left over. No longer made. Sabre was a division of Homelite and was lost when John Deere sold them off.

I ordered the 20" bar because it was a better price, and I intended on buying a 16" bar later on.

Oh, I'm gonna call'em alright, tomorrow. And, it won't cost me any postage to return the old chain. I've got another item to be returned to them that they screwed up on. Since it was their error, I made them send me a postage paid return label. I'll see what they say tomorrow, & then decide how to handle the situation. If they give me any hassle about sending me the correct chain, I'll just hold on to the item that was to be returned to them, until they send me the proper chain. I held up my end of the bargain, my credit card has already been charged. After this is settled I won't buy anything else from them. They left off several items that should have been included with the product. Very poor service if you ask me. And, the phone call tomorrow will be 3rd. one I've had to place to them trying to get my order correct. And, the rusty chain is like rubbing salt in the wound.

All I'll accept is the chain that the manual recommends, either the Husky H30 or the Oregon 95VP. At this point, I think I have the leverage.

If it's properly marked (and it sounds like it is), that <i>is</i> proper chain for your saw.&nbsp; It may (or may not) cut a slightly wider kerf than the other chain, but it's entirely proper for the bar/sprocket.

If you want to argue the chain with them, go with "it's not the <i>same</i> (make/model) as the other chain", but you can't say it's <i>wrong</i> chain.

So who is this disreputable business?&nbsp; Anybody anyone of us might wander into contact with?

Well,

I called the company about the rusty sawchain today. After a slight difference of opinion, the fella in shipping agreed to send me a replacement chain, that I asked for. So, don't know if it'll be the Husky H30 or the Oregon 95VP, but I requested either one of the two.

After I get this finalized I'll tell you the name of the outfit.

Well, as usual, you're wrong again! I succeeded in getting what was offered in order for this dealer to sell more saws, which was an extra chain. Not something for nothing.

Hi woodturner,

I think what Rocky meant is that it sounds like you are getting three chains instead of two.

Rebadged simply means that the manufacturer didn`t put their own name on it, they put someone else`s name on instead.

Getting a chain in a bag probably just means that the shop spun it off a bulk loop. Not every shop then puts the chain in a box.

Hi Doug, just trying to help, by helping WT understand the message with value in Rock`s post and also helping Rocky see how he could have said the same thing. I empathize with Rocky at times but it`s not fair for any of us to not give the benefit of the doubt to anyone asking a question.
