I am looking to get into milling. Mainly posts and beams for some timberframe projects, for now. I'm planning to start with a GB MKIII and mini-mill to start and then probably build my own as I figure out what I need and don't need.

I will be milling mostly red and white oak that will likely not exceed 24" in diameter. I think the majority will be under 20" diameter

That said here is what I have available for saws that I think may be suitable:

Stihls: 029s, ms290, 044, 046, 045 (needs work), 064 (project saw)

Husqvarna: 266, 272(needs work)

Homelite: C5, C9

Mac: 250

I'm thinking of running a 24-28" bar on the 046 on a MKIII and putting the 266 on the mini-mill with a 20" bar. Any major flaws in that plan?

The 064 needs a piston, with Bailey's selling the Meteor p/c kits I'm tempted to order a 066 kit and run that. Am I just asking for trouble?

The 045 will take an 056 p/c, correct?

I figure the Homelites and the McCulloch are not the best suited to milling but, they are sitting in the shed (along with a bunch of others :) )and need exercise.

That will suffice to get you started.

It's not a bolt on, but it can be done. You'll have to slot the jug bolt holes and clearance the case.
