I'm running a stihl 075 with 404 chain. I'm considering filing with 3/16 file. Any thoughts? I'm hoping to get a faster cut. I suppose, if it doesn't work, I can go back to 7/32 without problems.

Are you free-hand filing, or using a file guide?

Standard guidelines from Oregon call for 1/5 (or 20%) of the file diameter to be held above the top plate in order to get their recommended top plate cutting edge bevel/angle. Many conventional filing guides hold the file in this position. If you hold the file lower, you will get a narrower top plate cutting edge, and some additional 'hook', without changing to a smaller diameter file.

This is not a problem filing free-hand, or with a Granberg style filing jig, but may be hard to do with a conventional guide.

Of course, the trade off with a narrower cutting edge is that it is likely to dull faster, depending on what you are cutting.

Smaller file diameter means smaller gullet & less ability to move sawdust. How long is the bar? Chain saw milling or crosscut? Skip tooth or full comp?
