No beveraging this morning, I'm headed into the bush ( hungry hollow) to dump some stems with my 357 you built.
I'll take some pictures.

if you time it to run backwords, it will have the same power.
try this, use a saw with an impulse oil pump, it will pump oil witch ever way the engine runs. time it to 0 tdc. put a notched hub on the flywheel to wrap a rope around in place of the rewind. you can run it either way. you could put the coil on a statis plate to improve power. i'll let you sharpen the chain. maybe art can help with this.:blob2:

When I was first learning to drive trucks I had a Detroit run backwards on me. I stalled it on a hill and it was drifting backwards when I let the clutch out. There was a big red kill button right below the steering wheel that solved the problem.
I've heard other guys talk about both running backwards, and having them "run wild" where you need to climb out and throw something over the air filter to get it to stop before it blows up.
Haven't had a saw run backwards.....yet.

The big red kill button you refer to is a flap over the blower intake on a detroit that shuts the ait off to the engine. It has happened that if a blower seal lets go the engine will "take off" on it's own oil, thus the emergency shut down. This applies only to 2 stroke detroits.

I got a 353 in my timberjack and have stalled it on hills and they do run backwards. Thats when the air cleaner in front of me starts blowing exaust in my face:(

Yeah, it's cool seeing it suck the chips off the ground and deposit them back in the cut. Just watch out when the trunk stands back upright.

any nostalgia buffs here? I once posted what I thought was a trick question to a cagey old saw expert trying to get one over on him but was surprised . sdrawkcab snur 07 deresnoj , on the old woodticks forum . It was an airgap and heat related issue . (messages #'s 965,975 for those who don't search) ! Jon

LOL. I had an Echo CS302 that did that to me once, it was weird to say the least.

We had an International TD-9 dozer that ran backwards about 1974. My brother was pushing a big pile of brush on the landing and killed the engine. The brush and hill pushed him backwards enough to start him up but with the engine going backwards. He cut the fuel to stop it. That crawler had the deisel engine with sparkplugs-I'm not kidding. It started on gas and then you switched it over to deisel. I've never heard or seen any chainsaw do that though.

I've used a gasoline "pony" starter engine on a D7 on cold Rocky Mountain mornings to get the main power plant going, but have never heard of a combination gasoline/diesel engine. But then there's lot's else I haven't seen...

The International used a system to hold exhaust valve open part of the stroke to reduce compression to level for gasoline. It started on gas with a conventional ignition system then switched on the fly to diesel. I have seen my father start them up cold this way, but I think they would direct start on diesel when hot.
