I have 254 XP that had a new ring put in that now has about 50 tanks of gas through it.
Lately its been running a little rough and the chain wouldn't stop turning so I put new clutch springs in it today.
That solved the problem of the chain turning but it still stalls while idling sometimes (the idle is set correct, even a little high).
I had the local saw mechanic set the carb again and put the tach on it, everything was fine.
When cutting it runs fine but if I lay it on it's side and pick it up it almost always stalls and sometimes won't start until it cools down.
Even when sitting flat on the ground and idling it will run fine for a minute or 2 and then all of a sudden stall. Again it usually won't start until it cools down. But like I said it seems to work fine while cutting.
Does the carb need work ?
I GIVE UP ! NOW WHAT !

Might check tank filter. Carb filter could be clogged or diaphram starting to stretch. I assume you or mechanic checked spark plug.
50 tanks not that many hours, but if it needed ring job probably has a lot more before rebuild. Might be time to overhaul carb but I would check simple stuff like fuel filters first. Check out fuel tank air breather also could be clogged. Good Luck.

sounds like low speed slightly too rich. fuel is pooling after extended idling and sudden change of saws position stirs it up and floods out.

Part number 501 87 31 01 is the tank vent. From what you described, I think Crofter is right about the rich low speed mixture. If when you change saw position from side to side and one side idles faster than the other, it could be an indication that a crank seal might be starting to fail. The side thats up when it idles the fastest is the culprit.

The tank vent is on the clutch side of the saw. Look at the rear upper shock mount. It's about an inch away at the 7:00 position.
