What is your favorite saw for chunking down a good sized trunk, 10-20"? Mine is an 026, but some guys I work with use an 036. I was just curious to see what other guys use.

Ya boyeeeee!!!

butt with a 16" bar...

I also use an 026 for stuff up to twenty inches, unless its really hard wood, but I don't deal with a lot of that.

I only go to 12" with 020/335 then depending on increase in dia and distance to last cut I'll use my pp346 or if its larger chunks 20"+ then I'll use an 044/046. i feel that repeated cuts over a foot or so gets the little treesaws too hot.

Dang!

In the tree, I routinely make the last couple finishing cuts up to two feet or so with my 200.
But if I was slabbing stuff down I would axe for a 46.

Also in bigger wood the 020 is slow compared to even a 036. If I find myself in the heinous situation of firewooding a whole stick I send finished product down. better dispersal off sawdust and only one maybe two guys working in the hole. Also eliminates tendency of groundman burying chain into the dirt.

Oh its a mandatory skill just dang wasteful Plus when doing it I look down and wonder why we couldnrt take out some fence and take all 15 firs down with a JD330 with some fancy Wartaugh head on it all in a climate controlled cab, cd player crankin some John Prine. Now that should be the way to do these cheap%$ removals.

We use an 039 for that in between stuff that is too big for ms 200, but an 046 would be some what of an over kill.

My personal favorite for chunking when doing spar work on spurs is an 028 super, like Gord said full chisel and rakers low. Sthil doesn't make this particular model anymore, but I have one that is still going strong.

If its over 16" I'll use my 2149. If its over 20" I usually use an 036 or an 044. If its over 30" I use the 066 (the 088KD is too much for up in a tree, although I've done it before I had the 066).

394 with the 20"-er on it.

Sure it's heavy, but you don't need it for long!

Chunking

020 with 16" and 3/8 chain. Sometime i firewood a stick to give the groundie time to catch up.Bigger stuff O44 20'' 3/8 up till 066 with 30'' 3/8.I dropped a limb on the 044 and broke the carbie( groundie left it in the drop zone) so i put the 20" 3/8 on the O66.....ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ yeh

I always thought the McCulloch MiniMacs were pretty good for chunking-they sure weren't good for sawing!:p

Seriously, the climbing saw of the day works up until 14-16 inches then I'll probably go for the Poulan Pro 330. It is rare for me to need a saw larger than my regular climbing saw in the tree.
