I will have to elaborate more on this later but here are the nuts and bolts.
There is a guy named Skip Butler, who for all outward appearances is a friendly gregarious guy. I removed a large dead silver maple for him and was paid handsomely. He told me he was going start a company up here in Idaho and go big from the get go. He bought all kinds of equipment and said he had a crane, some bucket trucks, etc. that were being done up for him and would be here in a few months.
Skip has skipped town leaving a wake of unpaid bills and items. He left a partner here holding the bag and a lot of angry bewildered people. This guy can paint a pretty picture and sell people on his vision. He has a southern accent, stands about 5'8", has short brown hair. He will tell you about a Grandpa or Uncle who is in the tree business back east and does a million dollars of purchases with Stihl per year. He can run a saw and handle rope work. He says he can't climb trees anymore because of a knee injury he received playing college football at Georgia.
I don't know if any of what he said was true or not. His disappearing act has not hurt me in the slightest. I just don't want anyone else to get scammed.
Another tree guy in southern Oregon has told me he was there and did the same thing.
