Found a small leak on the back side of my OWB. The heat from my firebox comes towards the front door and then up and back through 11 tubes to exit up the chimney out the top back of the burner. Well no matter how dry your wood (All of mine is well seasoned) when the draft fan kicks off the exiting gases start to cool going up the chimney. This in turn will put moister on the bottom back plate on and off. the weld all along the back is in bad shape. Purchased this new at an auction 5 years ago. It was built by a Mom and Pop shop over in Whitespider country. Called the company and they have already had 2 of these back in the shop to rework and they told me to bring it up and they would make it right. (With some cost to me) So got it all unhooked today, will load it on the trailer tomorrow and head out. Guess it did not do me a lot of good to run distilled soft water with the PH check often worrying about corrosion from the inside. Finally burning LP for heat the first time in 5 years and not liking it at all!!

That sux. Least it isn't polar vortex cold now.
When I read your title I thought maybe santa brought you a box o chimney sweepins or something...

Seems to me like it would be a heck of a lot easier for them to come to you and make the repairs, than for you to disconnect and load an installed OWB to return it.

usually if there is one leak this year there will be another leak in the next year or 2. like all ready stated at least its not polar vortex. and pro-pain is cheap. still makes a guy cringe to have to burn it. especially if you're a few years ahead on firewood.

Burn the propane while it's cheap because it won't stay that way and once it skyrockets you'll be glad you had saved wood this year . You can actually save money by burning propane now at the current rates . It's an investment that will save you in more ways than one

I would agree with that statement in general, but for my OWB I think it is more of a design flaw then the whole thing taking a crap. It in near impossible from to keep from getting moister in the back compartment below the chimney discharge from time to time. Which in turn is going to cause your corrosion. You could very well be right but I am going to get it fixed and hope for the best.

Would that be the shop in Charles City??
I notice they don't have them sitting around outside the shop this year... maybe the new EPA regs have shut them down??

You would be correct Spider they are located in Charles City. They would be pretty close to your back yard wouldn't they? They do not build these anymore but I think it is a full service machine shop so these were not the only irons that they have in the fire.

Finally a quick comment on the price of LP. Not knowing for sure how long this will be down I topped off my propane tank and the cash price was $0.99 cents a gallon. When you can remember $0.30 cent a gallon LP, to have a 60% fill and shell out $300 bucks seems like a pretty big chunk of change to me. If this winter stays as mild as it is I would be sitting pretty close to 3 years a head on firewood. I am probably wrong but it still seems like I can come out OK burning firewood as apposed to LP. I do like to cut, split and burn firewood so that is one additional benefit that is a consideration also.
