Sealant vs Fuel Results.

A friend dropped off a machine that wasn’t running. He had used dirko on a carby gasket which blocked the impulse. Here is a picture of how different sealants react to fuel after a few hours.

The only one that really stands up to fuel is Motoseal (left which I had to use my nail and pick at it to remove it) the others are ThreeBond 1104, Yamabond 4 and dirko all are affected. ThreeBond dissolves, Yamabond and dirko swell and crinkle.


i’ve mentioned before that used correctly they’re fine, but be very careful if you use them as a dressing for gaskets both due to blocking holes or swelling into the intake.

A quick repair in this case, but thought I’d share a pic here. The only dressing compound I use for gaskets is either hylomar or aviation form a gasket. Both of which don’t react to fuel. You could use Motoseal but you’ll rip it on disassembly.

It’s good stuff, which of the hylomar sealants are you using? I know they come in thin medium and thick as well as one with acetone and then there is “hylomar advanced formulation” it’s pretty confusing lol.

Never used or heard of 1104.

For racing we used Threebond 1184 1194 as it was only one to not be affected by Nitromethane and Methanol Alcohol

For bases and even sealing the tanks so it would not eat away like others affected by it.

It’s a fuel resistant gasket maker. I believe they stopped selling it in the states due to the thinners used in it.

I know one of the ones I listed they stopped due to epa and made the other. 1184 1194. I dont recall which was first anymore as that was 20 years ago.

Yeah that sounds about right from how I understand it.

I found it. 1104 had lead in it. Why they stopped that one here.

I think California also stopped selling products with xylene too. Not sure if that was related.

I looked for 1184, but can’t get it here. I presume somewhat similar to Motoseal? Grey, chemical smell? Synthetic rubber base?

I had a hacked on cylinder come in with that stuff everywhere in cylinder. Down inside transfers and all and was still there.

Some horrible stuff to try and remove from everything. Almost having to scrape and grind off it seemed.

Ahh interesting, you had that a while? I think packaging has changed or maybe it’s just different out here!

I bought a large can (1/2 pint? , )with the brush cap of aviation form a gasket when I was rebuilding cars in the 1980s. Still have and still good.

They other thing that is resistant, but not a gasket maker is methacrylate.
