I have a Poulan245a that I picked up a few years ago. Piston was toast, but cylinder looks like it'd clean up nice enough with a light honing. It's got a 2"(50.8mm) bore & open transfers. Can I even hone something with open transfers? If so, what type & size hone should I use for something like this?

There are all kinds of things that you can do with safety. Many larger hones can catch ports with disastrous. A large automotive style hone can work fine if the stones are trimmed shorter. I have even used brake hones or not at all. Some emery cloth on the end of a drill will get you by. One thing that seems to be reliable for me is a hone that I bought at an automotive parts store. I made the stone blades a little shorter then drilled holes on one end of the blades so I can run wire to a spring. This allows me to adjust how much tension on the blades nearest me. I have always thought that I will make some more fancy adjustment tooling but wire seems to be the go operation. Thanks
