The 670 went through several small changes in it's run. The 4 basic versions are 670, 670 Super, and 670 SuperII and 670 Champ. The versions were never made at the same time and west coast versions of all were made. I'd say it ii safe to call your saw a 670 Super West Coast. It is also what I would call an early or white label Super because of the older style chain brake and white decal. Later Supers and Super II's have the newer style chainbrake and black decal.

A rough time line is (and sawtroll may disagree with the start date)
and this is off the top of my head:
670 1986-1987
670 Super 1988-1990
670 Super II 1991
670 Champ 1991-1997

I have no evidence that you are wrong, as very few Jonsered documents from before the late 1980s are availiable to me - I guess I could find more exact datings of the changes though, but you are close enough to how I remember it!

In case someone don't know, the "Champ" designation was a result of three consecutive wins in the WLC, 1987, 1989 and 1991.

It lives!!

Thanks Arrowhead, I was very happy to luck into this saw.......hopefully soon I'll get it fired up and see if the carb is still functional or if it needs to be kitted!??? Have ordered some parts that it needs since I removed the "skid plate".........muffler support bracket and falling dawgs.

I've been posting up in the 'Jonsered Saws' thread since that is where the hardcore J-red folks hang!! Here is a link to some more pictures of what I've found as I've started checking out this saw a bit closer;

After reading the post about 'Nogoingback' getting his Cutters Edge saw I figured I'd better update this a bit!! Just about a week/2 weeks?? ago I got this saw up and running.........the only thing I would still like to get is a new K&N style air filter for it. I'd hoped that 'Spike60' would reveal his sourcing for the sweet chrome topped air filter on the saw he'd posted up pictures of in the Jonsered Thread;

Anyways I ended up rebuilding the carb with a new parts kit, did a mild muffler mod on it and installed the new muffler support bracket and falling spikes. The saw just sounds noteably different than any other saw I've currently got........like it's got more compression and is hitting harder. To try and get the best performance and fuel longevity I run 100LL AvGas and I'm thinking with the higher compression that is part of why it sounds different.......along with the muffler mod. I did the baffle/divert-er plate removal like 'Steveo_supremo' did on his saw;

I also opened up the exit on the forward edge of the muffler but left just enough material to still retain the OE stainless steel spark arrester screen. I liked what Steveo did with his muffler mod(larger welded up exhaust exit cover) but my saw is stock and not modified with the bigger piston/cylinder as his saw was. I just wanted to improve it as much as possible but still retain the stock look with the diffuser cover over the stainless steel screen.

I'll be posting up some pictures over the weekend............I hope!! :msp_unsure:

Well I didn't make the pictures post over the weekend.......however here are some of my Jonsered 670 West Coast. The only thing I still want to find is a chrome topped air filter like Spike60 installed on his saw(shown in earlier posted pictures);

These pictures show muffler support bracket and falling spikes I installed after removing the aluminum "skid plate" that the Cutters Edge folks had installed on this saw.;

Muffler Mod Pictures;

This is the finished muffler mod.....looks very stock with the screen still in place....however the baffle has been cut out and the exit opened up as much as possible while still retaining the stock screen;

This is the view looking thru the muffler exit without the screen in place......you can see a pretty direct path from the exhaust port entrance to the muffler;

This picture shows the view from the exhaust port entrance to the muffler exit.......pretty free flowing once the baffle was removed;

I remember seeing them at a Fire Dept. conference, being advertised as a tool "designed for the Fire Service". The one I remember had a special carbide tipped chain, front deflector plate, special air filter, etc. It was designed for roof venting, cutting into siding, etc. It's been a few years since I've seen them, I don't remember any of our local depts. that bought or used them, but they were interesting for sure.

Several manufacturers still make "rescue saws", etc. Stihl has one. Our dept. still uses a K12 for the rough stuff and regular chain saws with special chain for vent work. The truck and our engines also carry wood cutting chains for clearing the road after storms.

Have you checked the K&N website? That is where I got this filter for a 281-

Thanks for the idea.......I will go check there and see what's available for the O.D. of the carb inlet elbow!!

Well after reading the op i decided to look up cutters edge and sent them a an email. They still stock pacts for the 625, 670, 2171, conversions. Even got a quote on the prices for the parts. Do I need them No, does it look cool yes. May do this on my 2171.

Hello Jeremy,

Any chance you could share the 'Cutters Edge' price for a new 670 stock/rubber topped K&N air filter........ if you did get it ??

Thanks,! XPLRN

Thanks ST for the manufacture date info!! Just curious, by chance do you think it might be this saw; Model Profile: 670 WEST COAST since it does have the full wrap handle as mentioned by a previous poster??

I don't see any beginning/end manufacture dates for the 670 'West Coast' or 'Super' versions however the basic 670 listing shows it manufactured from 1986 thru 1997. Sooo the variations of the 'Super' or 'West Coast' could have been produced anywhere in that 11 year manufacturing window??

Btw, the 3.7 number listed as hp in the link actually was the kW number = 4.9 hp. That number is for the WC version of the Super/Champ saws, not the original 670.

I also believe the original 670 came out earlier than 1986, that was mentioned in the thread, but maybe not in the US? :msp_confused:

Here is what Cutter's Edge sent me.
CERU2100 –Air Filter---######## $19.34
Not sure if its a K&N or not.

Thanks, ST, for that additional conversion clarification !! Great to know that the H.P. output is more than what was orginally thought !! :msp_thumbsup::rock:

Thanks, Jeremy, for that info. When I get some time I'll look up the Cutters Edge website, get their phone number to call and inquire about availability.

Dang, all these full wrap 670's making me jealous.... I think I would like a full wrap for my 630 to 272 converted J Red.

Anyone got one for sale?
