Just picked up a Sequoia saddle and would like the option of using a pulley on the bridge but as you know it comes with webbing not rope. Didn't have much luck with the search engine so here is the question: Has anyone found and used a factory made rope bridge from another saddle that is comperable in length? I have not yet used the ring which is available either so any input on friction or wear pros and cons based on personal experience would be appreciated.

I use a Cougar with a swivel on the rope bridge. My guess is that the Cougar rope bridge would work on the Petzl but the older Cougar bridges have been recalled. You could also try a Glide rope bridge. You would need to check the length. These are from Wesspur.

RacerX,
The cougar as well as an Ergovation are two more saddles I'm interested in so how do you like the Cougar and what do you do more of: take downs where you spend alot of time back in the belt on a flip line or limb walkin' and on the bridge.

I use a sequoia and like it alot. I thought a pulley on the bridge would be nice but was kinda talked out of it by someone at one of the big tree gear companys. Anyway , after using this saddle for about ..well...3 years I guess my suggestion is to not worry about a different bridge or a pulley. I have a swivel on my bridge and it is nice. I have used this saddle alot for all types of climbing and I personally dont think a pulley will make any real difference. It may make your bridge last longer but I got two years outa the original and I think thats pretty good. I have also heard of guys just tieing a short piece of rope to each ring with a double fishermens knot but I just use the standard web bridge.

TreeAce,
Right now using just my biner has the running end of my line 90 degrees out to the right...not great for workin ambidextrous. Was thinking of getting the Petzl ring but the swivel sounds a little more versatile. Have you used the ring and besides the obvious advantages of the swivel do you find the running end of your line where you want and slack tending easier? Also which swivel, make and model, are you using.

The swivel is pretty nice. I use a rock exotica , a "large" size i believe. One thing that bugged me about just using a biner is that if my line was slack sometimes it would kinda slide over to the side and kinda go over one of the rings that the bridge is connected to. This was an irriation and had nothing to do with saftey or even function but I found it annoying. I have never used a ring but I would think it alittle better than just using a biner. I can also tell u that having a swivel doesnt keep your line from twisting but it does help. The swivel I use has enough room for two biners to clip in with and don't forget u can still just clip a biner onto bridge if for some reason u need to. I like to use the bottom ring of the swivel (where the bridge runs through) to clip my "minder" pulley. I just use a small biner for this.

That's what I do, make my own rope bridge out of a piece of climbing line (safety blue is what I used). I climb with an older Navaho mini boss and tie the rope bridge onto the rings with double fisherman's knots... Works like a charm.

When u tie your dbl fish knots how much of a tail do u leave? Do u then tape the ends (tail) to what would then be the bridge part? One of the reasons I didn't do it was cuz I didn't like the idea of a short tail, but it seemed like a longer tail would be somehow ...annoying. I am now thinkn that a 2 or 3 inch tail is prolly just fine and would cause no bother. The other thing with it was that when I orderd a replacement bridge my "cart" was up over $400 so whats another $20.95 for a new bridge LOL. But tying my own bridge is DEF somthin I would do. IF U ARE NEW TO CLIMBING , just use what they give u or a replacment made for what u need!!

Tree md,
Thinking about getting two clevis's from a butterfly saddle and tying a bridge with climbing rope for my master II saddle the way you have described.

I tied mine with a 2 or 3 inch tail I guess. I've gotten so accustomed to it that I'm not sure how long the tails are but they are not enough to get in the way or even notice. I have a picture somewhere but my bandwidth is screwy tonight for some reason. I'll see if I can dig up the pic tomorrow.

I cut the bridge out of a retired Safety Blue climbing line. I always tape either side with electrical tape and cut in the middle then burn the ends whenever I cut into a line.

How many saddles you have scrat? You been climbing long?

Tree Ace,
30 years on saws, ropes and last 20+ of it in the trees and still learning. But has not been a full time gig for quite some time. Just 2-3 days a week now. As far as saddles go only the Master II and Sequoia currently with the Ergovation hopefully arriving before Xmas. How about you?

I climbed my first tree in 88. I did some construction off n on over the years, I am a half decent carpenter. But I never was away from tree work for long and always did side work. I used a heavy old bashlin swing saddle for along time. When the leather straps that connect the belt part to the swing part started come apart I finally gave in and started shopping. I went with the sequoia right outa the catalog. When I got the saddle and opened the box I thought Id been ripped off!! It seemed like a toy. It was just so advanced from what I had been using. Withn about..well..the first hour I used it, I realized how far behind I had been using that old heavy bashlin. And how about that Ergovation??? thats a sweet saddle from what i have seen. I checked it out closely at the TCIA expo and I am impressed. I didn't try it on though. If I can find a climber this year who is worthy of my sequoia maybe then I could justify the 5 bills. It will likely be my next saddle. I love the bridge system. After u try yours out please fill me in on how u like it.
