A colleague and I would like to amalgamate our skills in some form of partnership without the pitfalls of the normal partnerships. We work well together as a team and have the same ideals about how the job should be done and to what standard, it would be a shame to spoil a good working relationship if it all goes pear-shaped. Any tips appreciated.Cheers.

my tip is not to do it,just work in with each other theres no need

Just because you work well with someone doesn't mean you should form a partnership. Work ethics and business ethics are a totally different ball game. Partners may want different things at a different time for the biz. Could ruin a good friendship. Do your own thing with your own $$$$$ and subcontract work to your buddy.

I agree. And suggest you just remain friends, and maybe it's time to start working with other people. :p

I'm doing something similar with a gentleman in the lawn care biz. He has a degree in Turf Management and is very knowledgable about trees as well. We share almost identical moral and ethical business and even personal values. But, that being said, we are both very clear with each other that neither one of us is interested in a partnership. I give him the mowing accounts I don't want, and he gives me the tree work he doesn't want. I only take on 10 mowing accounts total each year, and he won't leave the ground so it works out well.

I know what you mean bubba, I am starting a separate company as a solo. I will sub out work back and forth with my buddy who is also a solo tree co. I am very firm that everything will remain separate and we don't fire up a saw on a job until we've agreed on the pay split, no excuses about breakdowns or any 'hardships' when the check is cut by the customer. I am insisting on a separation of duties on each job, and hope that will help us define the pay split on each job. I can't team up with someone on a vague 'let's throw everything we've got into the mix and split what we end up with' approach, that'll never work out in this duo.

I work with and for other tree companies often. As long as pay and duties are delegated over beforehand, there shouldn't be anything but good times in the mix.

I've had the pleasure of working with and for lots of guys/companies (some of them members here), and it's always been fun to see how other people do things. Sometimes I'm learning from them, sometimes they're learning from me. =)
