How does everyone feel about people saving and re-posting pictures, pdf's, other stuff? Personally I feel that this forum is about sharing info, feel free to save anything I've posted here or on other forums. Re-post, e-mail it to your friends, have fun. I have hesitated at times to anwser questions with stuff I have saved because I would not want the original poster to feel offended, or that I have stolen something. What does everyone think?

Thats what the internet is all about. If you dont want your information shared, you shouldnt post it on the internet. I personally hope I was to give good enough information to where someone would want to share it.

agreed, once you put it on the internet, its not yours anymore. Repost anything. If it helps someone else, great.:rockn:

Sure, no problem. Anything you post on the 'net is like putting it on a billboard anyway. If anybody can use something I've posted they're more than welcome to share it or whatever.

Way I see it ... If you save something, you probably did so because it was helpful information. And if someone else needs that info then there's nothing wrong with posting it. The only stuff that I think 'credit' should be given for is stuff like a good 'write up with pics' or a 'how to' (type of thing) ...

I get a lot of bashing from "sharing info", but i won't quit.........:bang: :bang: :D :D

Give & Take

I think most anyone who posts up their original works (technical write-ups and/or descriptive pictures) on the internet expects that info to be shared/passed along. I think it's a good idea to cite the original source, if it's known. If nothing more than to provide folks a reference point from which to search deeper. Some folks here are reservoirs of good tech info, and one can spend many idle hours just searching & reading old posts/threads.

Some pro-photographers get weirded out when their art gets pilfered & mass-distributed though (and I can't blame them, if they are doing it for a living) That doesn't much apply to this setting though...unless the saw manufacturers are anal about their service manuals... and it doesn't seem like they are. (at least Husky, with their PDF library) I remember a thread here where there was some concern over a person posting up pix & numbers of another saw builders cylinder porting work. To me, that sort of specific tech info is "sort-of" secret. If the builder is aware & OK with it, that's one thing, but it's a whole different deal for someone to take those measurements & freely offer them up to the public. That de-values the Pro's work IMHO.

On another website I admin at, we get all over folks who post up links to (or who offer for sale copied CD-ROMs of) "stolen" factory service manuals. DC/Jeep goes after copyright infringement pretty hard, and we don't want any part of that mess. OTOH our site is chock-full of good tech posts and articles, and those fit in with one of the site/club's key missions: Helping fellow Jeepers make wise upgrade decisions, and (hopefully) increasing their mechanical skills to allow them to do the mod work themselves.

LOL sorry for long-windedness, 2/3 through a pot of coffee and I got carried away. :dizzy:

this topic was the center of a huge ruckus not to terribly long ago. seems some members thought that if they typed something into cyberspace, it was still their property. that idea goes totally against the concept of the internet and the free sharing of ideas and info, but that didn't stop them. you can still see a few of them with their "copyright" in the sig lines of their posts.

I think I remember that, but there was more to it, wasn't it???????:biggrinbounce2: :biggrinbounce2: :help:

I read some of that........ It seems the folks who were upset were upset because their words were being used to make money for someone else. Hopefully just anwsering a question for someone is viewed a little different.

A while ago I read Ozflea blurb on phelon electronic ignition applications for conversion from points to electronic , I had 2 non-goer Poulan saws, coils defunct and used Ryobi weed wacker coils and got them going , e-mailed Mc Bob with my thanks for the info and he posted my e-mail on his site , I was real chuffed that he did that and seeing my reply on the net gave me a good feeling that his info helped me and could help others .
