Just wanted to pick the brains of the experts here: This is a two-parter...
#1. I have one of the NT grinders with Stihl041's set of shims. What size wheel do you guys sharpen your .325 pitch chains with? I have some Stihl RS that has been sharpened by my dealer, but every piece of literature that I have says that a 1/8 inch wheel should be use to sharpen it with. Now, the previous grinds on the chains looks as if he may have used a 3/16 inch size wheel. Is there a correct size or does it depend on the brand. I do see some advertise their chain to be sharpened with either a 1/8" or 3/16" wheel...
#2. If I "do" use a 3/16" wheel to sharpen my RS chains, I have trouble with the 10 degree tilt base. If I try to angle it 10 degrees (as per sharpening charts), I seem to grind into the chasis of the chain. It doesn't seem as if I get the wheel down far enough on the cutter before I am actually into the chasis. I double checked the tilt of the base to make sure that I have the correct angle on the chain, but maybe I have it backwards. If I put the tilt to what I believe is the "incorrect" position, I don't go anywhere near the chaisis and get a nice grind on the cutter. BUT, then the 10 degree angle would be tilted the wrong way on the cutter. If I am correct, you want the 10 degrees to slope up towards the tip/edge of the cutter, right? That would mean if you are sharpening the left hand cutters on a chain, the bed should be tilted away from you, correct?
Some help is needed here. Definitely not my brightest moment, but I am having a blond moment....
