Don t know him JPS, but if I Email him again or meet him I will. Why don t you go to the seminar?

Nevada is too far away and my season is just starting to pick up again. We had very wet in January and very cold in Febuary so I'm behind budget by a little bit. Though I'm ralistic about that, I only set a 2k goal for each month...

There are so many conferances I would like to go to, aside form the WAA annual one I went to in early Feb. I never miss that one :givebeer:

We were fantisizing about ISA in HI this year, but That is probably a pipe dream. Though Diane could not complain of lacking things to do

I ve got the free flights (wife was w airline) and I need some to recert this year and it will be nostalgic as I ve got most of my credits from Shigo seminars over the years. Like to meet you sometime, enjoy hashing things out w you.

You ve got way (way) too much going for yourself as an arborist to be just making 2k a month. Is this a type error?

I think what he means is that he tries to set aside 2K worth of funds each month for seminars - you know... a $24,000 dollar per year seminar budget. Right JPS

Not typo, just an incomplete statement. I budget for making 4k for Jan/Feb, those being the worst months here. If I make more it is gravey, I rarely make less.

I'm very low overhead, since I climb/consult for several local companies as a subcontractor.

My most basic budget is an average;

200 days per year
6 hrs per day
$35 per hour

Not bad for a Veteran with disabilities that keep him awake at night some times.

how can you break those day/year down?
200/12=16.667
4*4.3=17.2

So If I work less days in the first 2 months, I can make it up with more hours in the peak months.

I've got a spreadsheet where I can massage the numbers as the year goes on so I can know when I need to put in some extra time, or offer my wife a long weekend somewhere. ( for some reason she does not want to go off in the winter ;))

Been exhausted for a few days and not posted but thanks for the answer however none of my business. After sending post it hit me that you prob meant those 2 months. Still assert you are worth more than 35$ man/hr. I too am veteran, Viet Nam, USMC. Hope your disabilities are improving.

35/hr is the base rate for contract climbing in my annual budget. I bill out many of my clients at a higher rate, but often it works against me. They bring me in for one big tree that I get done in a few hours, and with travel I'm going home with $198.35.

My regular clients will put me in several trees, expect me to help with cleanup, stand around and chat, talk to their clients while they hump the logs out, and I take home +/- 350

Even if i go bare bones and average 200/day for 200 days I gross 40K.

It takes time to build the connections, but it is a viable alternative to starting ones own service.

I'm Gulf I era USMC, I was with the amphib fleet for 8 months during that thing. Probably the worst time of my life. The first 120 some odd days were at sea... That's another story. I did 8.5 years and have degenerative disk disease and arthritis... among other things. I have a cumulative 60%.

It took quite a while for friends, family and "care givers" to convince me that it's a pension, not welfare.

Like anything else, it pays the bills, not anything I'll get rich at. I talk to my friends with startups and it seems that they do not make a whole lot more then me with all the other stresses of employee's and equipment.

That 350/day sounds real good if you don t have to show up w bus liability and your health care issues can be taken care of at the VA hosp. I know a lot of miserable, stressed out rich people. Sounds like you re happy freelancing. Freedom is a very desirable commodity. I often feel like I ve got a giant load strapped to my back all day. Can t quite make enough and I bust ass. Semper fi.

Semper fi.

OooRah!

I carry a $1mil GenLi policy with equipment and unowned vehicle riders (eg if I drove your chiptruck and took out the proverbial bus of nuns, I'd be covered for the injury part)

I maintain all my own climbing and rigging gear, 3 saws and a 3/4 ton truck to cary it all around in.

Yes, the VAMC pension coverage does help a lot, but then most of my visits are related to the my service connected problems. i think the only 2 work related problems I've been seen for there were a thorn I could not get out and sawdust in the eye related infection. They wanted 12k/year to cover me under WC in the state pool.

My wife has her own very good union job with the regional power company, very good benefits.
