Question for those of you in Canada:

What experiences have you had trying get arborist supplies shipped from the US to Canada? How would you guys rate USPS, FedEx, and UPS as far as time, cost, duties, etc?

Thanks!

It's not bad, usually the wait is 1-2 weeks depending on where it comes from. I usually buy from Wesspur and Baileys. Wesspur ships by UPS and I usually get dinged an extra $30-40 dollars. Baileys ships USPS a bit slower but the prices we can buy things for when our dollar is high is well worth the wait time! I also sometimes get things shipped to my aunt in Michigan and she brings it across for me (I know you didn't want to hear that though, just throwing it in) But it's crazy sometimes what the mark up is on things here that we get for so much less in the U.S. When it comes to arborist supply stores around here for good equipement and good prices.......they are few and far between! On another note, it's funny we can buy a Oregon Bar/chain in the U.S. for cheaper then we can here, and the plant is in Guelph, Ont. Canada!

What's the duty for gear coming out of the states?

Don't think there is duty since Free Trade.

I know do not pay or have not paid any for a long time. You will pay brokerage fees which can take a quite a bite, and you will pay GST.

I order from Baileys, WesSpur and Sherrill (most from Baileys as I like the USPS best).

USPS take a bit longer, but you don't get hit with the large brokerage fees that UPS will do.

You will pay GST on all the shipments, and possibly brokerage fees.

I have bought from Bailey's, WesSpur and Sherill.. as well as a lot of items on eBay. (around $11K in the past 12 months)

USPS is by far the least expensive (one will pay the Federal Tax).. but if shipped by FedEx or UPS then you also pay a fairly large brokerage fee. (UPS is the most expensive from what I have found).

However, USPS is also the slowest.. usually close to 2 weeks.

Now I am looking at a bucket truck from U.S., and working to figure out what I need to do to get that across border.. paperwork for ownership transfer, etc.. Have not done before so am asking a few questions. I do have some friends who have brought vintage cars up from south, so should be similar.
