Hello Folks,

Just getting my feet wet/testing the waters in the firewood business. I have a neighbor who has agreed to let me cut down 6 or 7 30 ft maple trees and will let me take the wood. This experience will help me decide whether or not I will make a small business out of this.

My neighbor will not let me start until I have insurance to cover damage to his property or to myself.
I just wanted to see if anyone knew how to go about getting a short term insurance policy to cover me for a day at a time. I've called a couple of insurance agents and have had no luck so far. One of the insurance agents suggested that I take out additional coverage on my home owners policy but would prefer not to do that. Not sure if that will raise any red flags with my insurer.

I'm from Massachusetts if there is anyone in the area who might be able to help me out.

Thanks,

Bash

When we worked as a volunteer tree service we were able to work under our homeowners policy as long as we took no payment for the work that we did. We had a letter from our insurance company confirming that. After a few years they required us to buy arborist insurance, even though we still weren't charging. That was understandable and we so. You may try that but get something in writing as they have short memories. I wouldn't mention getting the wood in exchange for the work as that certainly isn't a fair exchange. If I were you I'd call the local tree services and tell them they can dump on your property and I'd tell your neighbor to jump in the lake.

Do you get the priveledge of cleaning up the mess - brush as well?
I like the "jump in the lake" idea.

You Guys are Spot On

Sorry, got to make this quick but yes, he's asking me to help bury the stump and remove the brush as well.

if you're going to make small business out of this, you're going to want (need!) insurance anyways (and LLC-ize it to protect yourself). do it now, it should only take a couple days to get it all squared away.

or, just do this.

If I were you I'd call the local tree services and tell them they can dump on your property and I'd tell your neighbor to jump in the lake.
