Many people do not use a puller like this. They use heat and dead blow soft hammer

I checked prices and found a cheaper source for a genuine factory tool.

The tool shown on the Ebay link is not a Stihl service tool but one for the Husqvarna.

The Husqvarna number is 502 51 61 01

There is another vendor on the bay that is $7 cheaper with free shipping

The prices of these has gone up and just last year I bought one for $15 less than what they are right now.

I should have kept my big mouth shut?

Buying an $85 tool for a $200ish saw? I'd probably do it for free if you brought the bare engine into the dealership. Order an OEM gasket kit, and ask about having the cases separated while you are there. Shoot, if you want to ship it to Georgia I'll still do it for free. Responding from my phone so it is not conducive to see where you are located while typing a reply. That kind works fine for getting cases apart. The Stihl tool allows you to pull them back together as well.

He's in Ct...another Ga boy offering to do it for free if you pay for shipping.

I have that tool and use it often. As said above, it's a Husky design, but it can lower its standards and work on a Stihl. If you do decide to buy one, contact member Watsonr for the purchase.

I bought one like that one and it works great.Of course I planned on splitting several cases and do full rebuilds. This one however doesn't work on the MS260.It might with some mods but it just won't fit down into the crank case behind the bearings.I'm not sure but I would think the 028 would basically be the same.

There was someone on here not to long ago that made his own. It looked very similar to this tool. Works great, but the price is a little steep.

Hmm, I'd rather buy one specifically for Stihl. Do I need to ask a Stihl dealer, I know 2 local... I'm in Shelton, CT.

I have a few saws that are Stihl and I plan on getting a few more.

I actually did take it down to my dealer, but he made it seem like it's not even worth it for the old saw. But he never mentioned a price. But I don't want to bother him really and ask for a freebie.

I'm more interested in getting the Stihl specific tool and learning more about engines myself.

Would like to become more proficient at repairs because I have a small landscaping biz.

Thanks for the help so far.

Do you know of anyone with a plasma and a welder? I plan on making one when I need it. I just need the dimesions.

Not really, I'm rather buy one and be done with it.

I'm sure it will be used more than once. If that was the case, I agree it's not worth it.

85 bucks for something that simple looking...insane.
Depends on the value of your time.I could have copied that tool, but right now my time is worth more than it cost me to build it.Plus it works so well that it will save me time when I'm working on saws.
I even had a splitter i built, which worked OK.It was a different design.I will grab the new one now.The other has it's place, someday someone will want to borrow a case splitter...old one to the rescue.
