hello every one, i went a priced a job today and found the client had attempted to DRIVE a bunch of pines over, i asked him what the hell gave him the idea to try what he did (by the way this twit has no exprience other then cutting fire wood)

he said he found this web site

http://www.gardeningaids.co.nz/FAQS/tree_cutting_safety1.html

i dont know if I'm allowed to post it but what the hell,

it shocks me that they would put this information on the internet, especially outdated stuff such as DRIVING, then have the cheek to say its from labour department.

should i go into this store and tell em to wake up to what there encouraging people to do.

I hate the fact now that any one can walk in off the street and buy a saw, thats why i pay moon beams in insurence is because of the half wits that buy chain saws and hurt them selves.

In the bigger picture is it maybe time to make it illegal to buy a saw or hire for that matter with out some form of liscense, you got to have one for a gun, got to have one to hire a ramset gun to shoot nails into concrete, whats the difference with a gun and ramset gun and a chain saw, in the hands of a simpleton armed with a tiny amount of info anything can be deadly

Why did you assume that my post was targeting you? Maybe I should have said, People should have to get a license to post on the internet.

The information available on the internet is what caused the homeowner to think that he could do the job himself not the fact that he could buy a saw without a license.

Why don't we say that you can only run safety chain while you are at it.

Greater regulation is not the answer to end stupidity.

I read the link first, didn't see what you were on about, went back and checked again and saw a one line reference to driving trees onto each other, under the heading of things that should ONLY be done by an experienced cutter or a professional.

So this twit tried to do something that the site disclaims as dangerous and only attempted by pros...and additionally there is NO description of the technique!

My comment would be that he is indeed a twit and should have his saws confiscated

If I was to comment on the site itself it would be to remove that one line about driving trees onto each other...not a good thing...otherwise EMPHASIZE the 'only to be attempted by pro's' heading. Other than that, most on the information there is pretty sound.

....the link does look as if it has very solid info.. do you mean putting one tree into another? come up here and thin some reprod with me and by the end of the day you will have seen plenty of that. can you please specify your complaint again? maybe go more into detail? why would you want people to not be able to buy chainsaws unless there professional? you a nazi?

the wording isnt very good "driving trees into one another" i agree. but give the guy a break he got in over his head, realized it and called a professional. no need to crucify him and ban chainsaws for homeowners.

As far as needing a license to buy a saw I disagree. I'm a mechanic and take pride in my work but some of the work I see done by so called "mechanics" or car owners, is scary. And with a car you have much more potential to kill someone else, than with a chainsaw. Should we pass laws that you can't buy hand tools, or work on your own car without a license?

I was JOKING :dizzy: when I said he should have his saws confiscated!!!

Sheesh we have some sensitive peeps here!

BTW in the UK you do have to show your certificate of competence in order to buy or rent a top handle chainsaw...and if you are a pro you have to show your certs to get insurance...

I was referring to the op Bermie, just out of curiosity, do you need to have some kind of license to work on cars over there?

I was being serious when I asked my question really. Just yesterday I came across a guy trying to pull a ripped out hickory branch down with his jeep. Of course it was futile and when I went up to finish cutting the tear the butt flipped out and landed right where he had previously positioned his jeep. It went thud.

Yup, if government is the answer, it must have been a pretty stupid question.

I like how they tell you to have the owners manual for your saw with you when felling a tree. Seems to me if a person is that green...

the stihl manuals are actually not bad for showin how to do basic felling notches and backcuts. as long as the tree isnt dangerous just about any competent person with instructions should be able to fall it.
