Should I walk away from this $2000 job?

When a potential client mentions legal action during the estimate it is time to pack up and move on. Do they even own the property that the work is going to be done on? You should only be discussing the work with the property owner, not the tenant? You can write a contract to say the work was done to ANSI standards and the job site left was left with the obvious hazards removed. Price the job accordingly to cover yourself. On a large scale job like that contract in 1/2 down to at least cover your cost if they balk at the remainder for some reason. If you have enough work that you do not need this one then walk, if not price it to you specs, not the property owner and get some signatures. be careful.

NO,NO,NO!!!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS! TRUST ME, BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!

These are bottom feeders looking for a free job and a paycheck from you or your insurance after you worked your ass off to help them. They live in HER parents home? This guy is a loser and now he wants to "pay" you $2000 for removing a tree from her parents home? No freekin' way! Tell him too hairy for you, not confident in you ability to do it for your own safety and walk. $2000 is NOT a lot of money in the long run and more work will come to you in time.

you'll never see the 2K!

if you can get 5k up front and a liability waiver,i might think about it.

i think you should get them out of your head and move on.i know things are tough lately but not as tough as it will be when they drag you in their crap.

Maybe you should ask them if they have "GOOD" Home owners insurance and if they lie your lawyer will know. :)

It does sound a bit screwy, but the comment about a lawyer doesn't make sense. An expert at initiating lawsuits would just ask to get a certified copy of the insurance. They wouldn't be trying to scare you off, they WANT you to do the job so that they can collect money.

I suspect that they are just ignorant of how insurance is verified, perhaps uncomfortable with the entire bid process. They are more likely to be nincompoops acting without clearance from the parents, or perhaps they are negotiating for the parents without having the proper experience to do the "property manager" job.

Let them know that you are concerned about payment, ask them to draft a certified check for whatever your price might be, and have them deliver it to a mutually agreed upon middle-man, probably a lawyer, with an understanding of the terms that will dictate whether you get the check or not.

Have them sign an agreement to your terms, and make no promises about "safety". No check, unwilling to put up the cash up front, or agree to your concerns: problem solved.

Everything covered? Go to work!

My opinion about treework and lawyers: unless you squish something really expensive, most treework isn't worth enough money to get a personal injury lawyer interested. But then, maybe that is because I've never been sued.

I'd run. If they ask you why there trees are so hazardous tell them you think there's a lawyer hiding behind ever one. We have a local family that does the same thing; sue everyone, everyone's on disability. If they all died in a horrible accident the town would shut down for three days of celebration.

Thats pretty funny. I figure you would go to thier funeral to make sure they were really dead. Culls, oxygen thieves.

If you do the job go ahead and pop him in the mouth
if your gonna be sued be sued for something enjoyable.
I knew this old man that had a young punk pestering
him, the old man was wealthy but a real good chap
but had enough of this punk and hit him over the head
with a shovel. When he went to court the judge asked
him if he could tell the court how he hit the plaintiff with
the said shovel. The old man paused a minute and then said;
no sir but if you got a shovel I'll damn sure show ya!
This happened, he got contempt and paid but walked
out with a smile:cheers:
