I have noticed a lot of BigShot threads lately and it got me to thinking. I know this site is full of us creative types and one or two professional critics so I thought I would throw this out and see what comes of it. I am thinking of developing and possibly marketing a mechanical flip up sighting system for the good ole BS. This will be a removable and adjustable peep sight sight similar to the quadrant sight on a M203 grenade launcher. Im not doing the laser sight concept so please dont even bring up that subject.

I am curious as to how many of you guys would actually use something like this or if any one has seen or heard of something like this. I want to make sure that the idea isnt patented and if it isnt how do I get a patent for my design? I have delusions of grandure that someday my idea may be carried and endorsed by Sherrill. I have spent years wondering why I didnt come up with an idea like the Big Shot, or the Port a Wrap.

I already have the concept in my head and Im ordering some goodies to tinker around with to come up with a working prototype. I will keep ya posted on my progress.

I would use it if it worked. Haven't seen any. Great idea . I think one would have to have a consistent hold like in archery to obtain consistent results. (Like an anchor point.) The pull resistance factored into the equation also. (Variable poundage like a recurve bow).

You could have a set draw length to be consistent, but every shot I make is at different draw lengths depending on the target distance.

Put your recommend throw ball of your choice on your label of a ballistics chart sticker that you extensively done your R&D on to show desired height and hell yeah! Maybe?

Thanks for the input Ryno. Just a little about me. I have been a working arborist for 15 years and before that I was a sniper in the army for 8 years. I know a little about tree climbing and a little bit about ballistics and shooting. Looks like Im gonna have to get my contraption assembled and hit the range and fill out some data books books so I can come up with ballistics charts.

Sounds like your off to a great start.
HOOAH!

Having obtained six patents myself Tao, I can assure you they ain't cheap!

Back in the mid and late 90's they ran about 6K each, provided the USPTO doesn't want to argue the originality of any of the claims in your patent application? Each time they do's about 1300 bucks a pop, perhaps much more now?

From a practical standpoint the entire tree industry's a relatively small market, the segment that'd actually use your proposed device's even smaller, unfortunately.

Even worse is that your patent's only as good as your ability to spend the money on attys to enforce it once someone has infringed on it.

Best of luck with your project though mate.

Sounds like you would need some form of trigger system connected to the BS pole so you can get consistent pulls. Right now having to pull and aim simultaneously and then try and aim through a sight is more than my small brain could function.

The other challenge I see is poles. We don't have a dedicated BS pole. I have a BS on my truck, but I just put together a couple of pole pruner poles. It's not the best and I'm not as good as everyone else on here claims to be, but works for me.

A trigger is a given. Im going for accuracy here. Not having a dedicated pole could be an issue because I want to mark off draw lengths along the pole that way there is consistant, or at least as consistant as possible tension release.

Sherrill yellow poles as your benchmark would be a good way to possibly get them on the bandwagon.

Tao ill have to show you what we came up with we been messing with it for close to a year now. After seeing this other stuff for sale especially the one that just came up on tree stuff I just had to say wait a minute. Most of them are just 30$ at home depot. A friend of mine invented the electronic solenoid in the early 80's and we use them at up to 1100 psi. we have incorporated it with the capability to digitally increase and decrease pressure. I just finally have it ready to start making some videos but it has capabilities beyond 300ft. we had the parts machined so it didn't look like a home depot special.

Ill get some pictures up this week I don't wanna go to far as we are trying for a patent also that is expensive as hell, and if it ever sells royalties on the solenoid and so on have to come into play.

we spent a few weeks finding the best length and material for the barrel different ways to port it and so on.

Id love to show you what we been building been messing with it for close to a year. We are going to start making videos of it soon. It will take the throw ball launching to a whole different level. We where looking into patents but for the most part just did it to make a badass throw ball launcher.
