I think it has it's advantages. At first thought I saw it as a glorified ATV winch, but since it is not electricaly operated it would be a good backup should your battery go dead on your atv.
In conjuction with a snatch block, it would commit a large tree over, but is only as strong as what it is mounted to and of course the strength of the cable. It would be interesting to see what type of spooling device it has, but being a capstan, I would assume it spools well on the drum. Also, if the drum can be locked it would be a real plus.

Capstans don't really spool to collect; just grip. The coils feeding on, but also off; so there is no power loss/speed gain like a winch, comealong etc.

i had oine and didn't have good luck with it, maybe expected too much; but i beleive RBTree has liked his, read other good 're-views' here.

Couldn't lift, then lower through the drum as friction device, the capstan itself is a specialized aluminum to dissipate heat faster, from the gripping of the rope.

hmmm

if its hand held its only as strong as your footing? yeah? my thoughts

That thing would be wayyyyy handy for draggin a bull elk out of the back country. I may have to put that on my list for cool stuff to by for huntin season.
