got a hackberry tree on my side yard. twin stem begins at root flare. tree height @40-50. DbH @17 of main stem and 9 of secondary leader. included bark at base. 2nd lead adds character.
do i begin the surpression of the secondary with the goal full removal(of the lead) over the next couple years?
or do i let it go and manage the physical issues as needed?

dont own a dig.cam. so cannot post pic.

I have a question for the arborists on here, when cabling do you leave a hoop in the cable or someway for the leader it is wrapped around for the tree to grow? I had a willow tree here and someone, I'm guessing years and years ago, put a chain in it. Well anyway when they put it in it must have been to tight cause it cut into the tree (tree grew over it or at least tried) and it killed that leader coming off over my place. I had complained that it was dropping alot of branch's on my place so it was removed. I worried that the leader would break in a storm it was about 14" where it split off from the other 2 leaders. Anyway dont mean to take from the thread just curious it something like that has to be taken into consideration.

depends on what type of cabeling you choose. the steel versions use a lag or eye bolt placed into or thru the tree. the cable is spliced onto or placed thru a thimble and set onto the bolt.

correct rocky full removal of the second leader is not desireable. i put a few pruning cuts in the top the other day and removed some old storm damage. i was at the top when i thought of throwing the question out to AS for som suggestions.

Thanks, I just try to understand some of what you guys do. Like I said i found it weird they would have put the chain so tight but maybe it wasn't when they first put it in.
