I bet it took more than a few minutes to chew thru them with a dremmel cut off disc.:msp_tongue:

Rollers and balls in bearings are usually in the low 60's Rockwell 'C' scale.

From what I have observed, the bearing surfaces on saw crankshafts have been induction hardened. I.E. selected areas and not the whole thing.

Wasn't bad cutting the rollers. I was a little worried about overheating and bluing the bearing, but that didn't happen.

Where to begin? It's a Canadien. It's 139cc, which makes it the largest saw I own, and one of the largest one-man saws out there. And, as you pointed out, it's starting condition makes it quite the challenge to rebuild. Fortunately, I have managed to gather all the parts needed. Canadien/Skil stuff is nonexistent so I had to get clever.

Should have a working saw, or nearly so, by the end of the week.

Much thanks for your very informative....and KIND to me reply!!!
Well deserved Rep sent..

You asked a reasonable question about an obscure saw. Of course I gave a kind reply. Feel free to pass on all large Canadiens and Skils and send them to me.

Trust me...If I for some unreal reason stumble across some...
I will remember you...and will definitely get them to you!!
Wow...I had no idea that saw was that big!! Thanks again!!!

Got to love a big ole saw. Chris just left with a bunch of cleanly blasted big ole saw parts.

Cant wait to see it done.

And now I have a bunch of freshly painted parts. I'm well on my way to having an assembled and running saw by the end of the week.

I have the new main bearings driven onto the crank, the wrist pin bearing in the rod, and the new rings fitted to the piston. Just gave the cylinder a bath in the ultrasonic cleaner and lite scotch-brite cleaning. Noticed at Mark's this cylinder uses a separate sleeve that is pinned to the aluminum casting--not that I would ever dream of pulling this sleeve. I can see the slight sleeve/aluminum mismatch in the exhaust port.

Now I have to figure out how I'm going to assemble the crank/side plate/rod. Unlike any other saw I have, the flywheel side crank seal is located in a recess on the back side of the side plate. This means the seal goes in before the crank or bearing.

The latest. Got the engine together and the ignition system. Have spark just spinning the flywheel by hand. I had to touch up the paint on some of the other parts so this was as far as I could manage today. Tomorrow will see the saw just about completely done.

One thing of note: the carb spacer block--made of some sort of plastic--is cracked in several places. None of the cracks look to be clear thru to the intake tract but I suspect its days are numbered. With Mark's help, I ordered a piece of 3/4" aluminum that I intend to drill and die grind to replace the plastic.

Looking good Chris!

Nice job Chris,
Can't wait to see it all together.

Thanks. I don't think I got the white right. If anything, I may have stumbled onto a good match for Stihl grey. I really didn't have anything to color match. Doesn't matter--anything is better than what it was.

Lee, I owe you a phone call to talk about that primer. And, see if you can get some good pictures of your top decal so I can have some made up for mine.

Nice work!!

It's kinda weird how the spark plug is basically sideways out of the top of the combustion chamber... usually they are near 45 or so degrees from parallel with the bore.

Waiting for vid... :)
