Hi guys. I haven't been on this great forum in quite some time, good to be back. I realize this isn't a chainsaw specific question so moderators feel free to delete it. I am in the market for a quality ice auger. For a multitude of reasons, I refuse to buy an auger with a Tecumseh engine on it. I want one with a chainsaw type engine on it. I am currently looking at an Efco model TR1540 ice auger. I have been trying to gather information on Efco and am thoroughly confused. Efco is apparently distributed by Tilton Equipment Company. I have linked the following company names to Efco although I am not sure who is who, who owns who and who builds what for who. I have linked Efco with Emak, Olympyk and Oleo-Mac. I recognize some of these names as chainsaw builders. Can anyone enlighten me on the Efco situation and wether they are a reputable brand? I am quite sure that Olympyk and Oleo-Mac were/are quality chain saws, but am not sure. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Rubicon, if you copy this thread over to the used equipment forum, then I can tell you I have a two-man Stihl auger, but just the transmission and the powerhead. This motor was used on the O8S chainsaw and the TS350 cutoff saw. The trany and motor are in top shape so all you'd need is the frame and control linkange as well as an auger.

Efco is the current US name for the products imported by Tilton equipment from EMAK, Spa of Italy. They were formerly marketed as Olympyk, but the US Olympic commitee didn't believe purposely misspelling the name would sufficiently protect their branding marque.

Really!

Emak saws are also available as Oleo-mac and other names in other countries. I think they are decent products, sold for a little less than the Swedish and German stuff, although I can't say about the ice augers. There are some augers made with the echo (Kyoritzu-Japan) engines on them too...that's what we see a lot of here in Mn.

I admit that my ice-fishing auger is an old Eska-Mo, with a techumseh. Yes, it's a POS, but it still runs, sort-of. Every year I swear at it, but it always finally sputters to life and drills the holes...
