Just wanted to post what I did to save my tree from this awful stuff.
I took a screw driver and kinda dug out the wet rotted part and the slime. it kind of smells like something fermented or yeast smelling. I also pulled some loose bark areas and found the wet rot started there so I dug that out too. Then I used diluted clorox mixed 9 to 1 with water and sprayed it on good in all infected areas. I let it dry for a few days and then I painted shellac on all the areas. I let that dry for a few days and then I filled in the areas with that spray foam stuff that hardens. it seems to have done the trick and my lovely big old maple tree never seemed to mind. Leaves stayed nice and green after all that. I will get winter root feeding done this winter. Kept the old girl watered during the drought here in Ohio. I call her my torso tree. She has 2 amazing male and female torsos with the limbs going upward like legs. Awesome!
Well I wanted to add this as I had such a hard time identifying the disease or finding a way to treat it. So I hope this helps.

Sat Nam! an article from 3 years ago describing the treatment you did is Page 32 here http://www.tcia.org/PDFs/TCI_Mag_09_04_FULLsm.pdf

i'm not sure about the sealant and filling on this, but totally agree on the sanitation work. post pics here next June showing the scar tissue growth and the lack of oozing.

Use of Sealant

Hi Vibes Treeseer!
I wanted to explain why I used the sealant. Huge tree limbs spring forth from the main trunk. There is an area about 2 feet deep where years of leaves composting created dirt in which a honeysuckle was growing. After digging all that out, I thought that if I used that expanding foam sealant in that area - then the leaves would blow away and water would not stand in that area. I think maybe this is what set the scene for the Slime Flux to take hold. Then I got a little crazy with that fun foam stuff and filled some cracks too-HA! The funniest thing is a few days later I went out to look at the tree, coming out of the center of that large area of foam was a 2 foot sculpture that looked like something from a Dr. Seuss Book.
Thank you for the feedback-I will enjoy reading the entire book you gave the URL for.

I wish I could see some pictures of all that. Sounds very unusual.
the entire book you gave the URL for.
That is just the back issue of a magazine; the page 32 article is/may be the most relevant to you.

If you have a cavity in the tree I have sometimes used a rag with the one end into the moist area and the other hanging out in the wind. It works like a wick and drys out the cavity.
